Damn, missed the FF talk. While my tastes have shifted and grown as I've experienced more games in the last decade, my FFanboyism has staunchly remained. I love that shit so much it grosses me out. I have a hard time scoring these games, because any objectiveness is long gone (I've played each multiple times, a few over 6 times), so I just rank em in tiers. GOD TIER: FF6, FF7, FF10, FF that can't be discussed STILL REAL GOOD TIER: FF4, FF5, FF9 HALF GOOD HALF NOT: FF8, FF12 (Sorry Ex ) THE FIRST 3: FF4 kinda started what I consider the cliche FF game thing, these 3 don't really delve into the areas I like. 1 was pretty fun, 2 is weird but shows signs of early FF melodrama, 3 might have been fun, but I had already played 5, which is just better imo. I still liked em all, as well as X-2, both MMOs (These were/are insanely good MMOs, if you like MMOs), and some of the spinoff games. Mystic Quest was okay, mostly saved by its presentation for me. I do want to play the FF12 International release (Which is now possible), so maybe that one could still move up!

Well, I would go into further discourse about Xenoblade's foibles, but it's too new for this board. Sorry! My bad for bringing it up. Excuse me while I go flog myself. And I compounded it by bringing up another Operation Rainfall game. Whoops! I do think it's because they're Wii titles. As far as Nintendo hardware goes, it's two generations back, so it feels older than it is, I guess. Not to mention the tech being firmly in the "two Gamecubes duct-taped together" category.

No offense my man, but how old were you when you played the bolded ones? HALF GOOD HALF NOT: FF12 (Sorry Ex ) FFXII is a divisive entry, truly, and understandably. I'm just glad SQEX brought FFXII back via PS4/PC. FFXII deserves a second chance! I have been considering ways to play FFI, FFII, FFIII, and FFIV. I am wondering about playing the PSP versions of those. (FFIV on PSP is too new to discuss here.) So, are the PSP versions of FFI, FFII, and FFIII any good? (FFIII PSP btw is a port of the 2006 DS version, just in widescreen with higher resolution polys.) These are the PSP entries I'm talking about: Are these any good? Or is there a better way to play FFI-III without going full NES. I compounded it by bringing up another Operation Rainfall game. It's inevitable any of us could accidentally namedrop a "too new for HRG" game. As long as we catch ourselves, we're on the right track.

No offence taken man, I think I have good taste elsewhere, but when it comes to FF I veer heavily towards nostalgia and personal preference.
I was... 12 I think, when I played FF7, and 14 when I played 10. FF7 was only my 2nd traditional RPG after Mario RPG, and in between 7 and 10 I literally just played every FF game I could find.
So yeah, shit ton of bias. I basically lived in those worlds. If I had to be objective, I don't think 7 is that good, maybe an 8. 10 I'd rate a little higher.
I'd probably put 6 around there too, though, I think they all have plenty if flaws.

The DS version of FFIII is remarkably faithful to the NES version, right down to that brutal stretch run at the end with no save points. Don't die at the last boss, it'll take you like two hours to get there again! (Seriously, what were you thinking, S-E?) The big change (other than the PSX-era presentation) is some small addition of character to each of your protagonists. It's not much, though.
Also, Ninjas and Sages rule. Although now that I type that, I'm remembering there were some changes in the class system that made it more worthwhile to stick with a particular class. I needed a lot more job levels to get my Monk as effective as he was as a Black Belt. Pretty sure the NES version didn't do some of that. In my opinion, FFIII for NES is right up there with Dragon Quest III/IV as best on the system.

I don't know if age matters. A lot of my friends (~30) think FF10 is the best. Pre-PS2 is an allergic area for many folks. I think I was exposed to FF7 first, kind of part of this PSX holy trinity one of my friends had in grade school. FF7, MGS, and Resident Evil 2. Still some of my favorite games ever. He didn't really let me play them though haha. I think FF6 was the first one I actually played when I got into emulation a few years after that and dove into the SNES JRPG gold mine. Then when I got a PS2, I played Chrono Cross, FF7, FF9, and FF8 in that order. I started diving into the other ones after that. Sarge : One thing about FF3 NES is that it's crazy impressive on a technical level. The game is massive and I'm wager it has one of the largest OST's on the system. @ex Are we really not going to talk about simple ports/remakes? FFIV Complete PSP is awesome, but it's mostly based off the GBA version. Just gets a big visual face lift. It still has all the post end game extra content, but I didn't really play much of it after beating it again. It also has Interlude and The After Years, but I hated those. There's a fast forward/auto battle feature I don't recall being in the GBA version. FF2 PSP was the only one I beat. Either way it's a funky game though, but I think this version was retooled even more over the GBA version. Still, you will be beating yourself up to level up HP and other ridiculous things for its leveling system. I think the GBA/PSX/PSP version of FF1 are pretty much the same. The art style of FF3/4 DS is a total turn off to me. Guess it's up to you if you're fine with that. But I like the aesthetics of the NES/SNES games a lot and losing that kills it for me.

I think if I'd been a teenager when I played FFVII and FFX, I would feel different about them. But I was 28 when I played FFX and 30 or so when I played through FFVII. Nostalgia bias is a helluva drug. Are we really not going to talk about simple ports/remakes? FFIV Complete PSP is awesome Well I was thinking about the "After Years" portion of it, which released 2011 for Wii IIRC. But yeah, the base game is still based on the GBA version, so it's viable then. The art style of FF3/4 DS is a total turn off to me. Guess it's up to you if you're fine with that. I think the polygonal graphics in FFIII for DS/PSP look quite nice personally. But I can understand if you'd rather have 2D sprites and tiles.

Preferences for retro games and their aesthetics can be pretty different for us I guess hehe.
I remember disliking the new avatar portraits, but that's not a huge loss. I really wish we could have gotten FF3 and FF5 at least in FF4C's style. FF6 maybe could have looked cool a little remixed too, but it already has a perfected distinctive style on the SNES. I think there's some charm in how FF4/FF5 SNES look even if they're not as detailed though. But FF4C was a nice touch up that still retains the feel of the original to me.
FF4C also has the DS remixed music, which I think sucks... thankfully you can switch it to the classic OST! I don't know if that's an option on FF4 DS.
I actually think FF4 and FF5 might be more popular than FF6 in Japan from what I've heard and gathered. All the remasters FF4 has gotten over the years and ExDeath's appearances in a lot of crossovers might be a testament to that.

I gotta say, I'm surprised at how good Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings is. I thought this was going to be a much simpler RTS experience than it is. This is actually a fairly full fledged RPG, just the mission exploration and battles are RTS styled. I've got 5 hours in it at this point, and the game completion ratio says I'm at 33% done. I'm cautiously optimistic that FFXII:RW may be a winner. As long as the difficulty balancing doesn't go to crap towards the end.

I've been enjoying reading your posts on it. I enjoy XII's world, but have never really clicked with the RTS genre. Would you recommend this game as a possible gateway into the genre?
