Dark Souls / remastered version Yes I recommend the remastered version, that's the version I beat* (PS4 version specifically). The extra FPS is 100% worth it. *Beat via 100% melee character, zero magic usage (not even restorative/buff magic), no walkthrough/strategy guide = max fun. Also did all the DLC.

Okay, I'll start this in December. It turns out chibby already got me a copy on CD-ROM. BattleZone 1998 is an amazing game. I say that from experience, as I beat it back in 2002. However, I strongly recommend you read the manual before playing: www.replacementdocs.com/download.php?view.2126I have played but not finished Battlezone II: Combat Commander (1999). It's on my "need to beat someday" list. There's also Battlezone: Rise of the Black Dogs (2000) which is an N64 exclusive. Always meant to check that one out, will someday. Thanks for the manual. I might also need to check this one for available patches. Whenever I go to the settings menu when a mission is underway, then return to the mission from the menu, the game crashes on my Pentium III PC. Okay. If you haven't played Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D before, I recommend that. It took me about 10 hours to beat, but that's mostly because I'm slow.

I might also need to check this one for available patches. Indeed. With pre-Steam era PC games (ergo no automatic patches) one should always check/apply. In this case: battlezone.fandom.com/wiki/1.5_Patchhttps://www.reddit.com/r/battlezone/comments/olf9o/how_to_upgrade_battlezone_1_to_ken_millers_15/I beat BattleZone (1998) using a Pentium II 450MHz and an ATI Rage 128. I have, I beat the PC version of it back around 2000. A very fun combat flight sim and a good recommendation. - I'll throw out another old PC rec to anybody. This is one hardly anybody has played, but I quite enjoyed it back in ye day: Fun third person shooter/action-adventure built on the id Tech 2 engine. It's not on Steam or GOG, but is easy to find regardless online.

Gah, my 360's drive has decided it doesn't want to read discs consistently, at least the boot sector portion. It's fine if it ever catches that and spins up, though, so that's weird. Probably need to pop it open and clean it. Or maybe it's just time to try to mod this system. I did start up Dark Souls (again), so we'll see if I stick with it. I feel like perhaps I should play via the remastered version, though - the frame rate definitely chugs in spots, and I've heard horror stories about Blighttown. Only certain OG's like myself will remember the pain of the 360/PS3 versions of these games. But it's all for a laugh. I will never play those versions again and wouldn't recommend them to anyone with other options. The funny thing is that Demon's Souls runs better than Dark Souls 1 on 360/PS3, I think mainly because it had less fidelity and wasn't as demanding.
I guess Ex suspects you'll like Dark Souls more than Demon's Souls? The Dark games definitely are a tad more King's Field-esque. Demon's Souls is half the length of Dark Souls though and the beginning of it all... either way looking forward to you playing one of these finally. Adult Zelda! hehe
I wouldn't even overstate the difficulty either. They just require more patience and some classic NES styled trial and error that was alien for the 7th gen a bit. I think you'll be fine and enjoy them.

I suspect Ex would settle for me playing anything in the Souls series, although I do feel either Demon's or DS1 would be the proper starting point.

Thanks! I will use that. That's very close to what I'm using! I'm on a Pentium III 500 MHz and an Nvidia Riva TNT 2. Have you played the 3DO version of Road Rash, or any of its ports?

I'll just say that Battlezone was also extremely playable on a Pentium 166 MHz back in the day. A Pentium III should chew it up and spit it out.

I guess Ex suspects you'll like Dark Souls more than Demon's Souls? Because DeS is more Mega Man whereas DS is more Zelda. Sarge likes MM but he loves Zelda. - Are Demon's Souls and Dark Souls the hardest games I've ever beaten? No. Are they harder than 95% of other modern era games?Yes. Especially if played without artificial aid. Are they awesome for other reasons besides their challenge level?Absolutely. - Other games all ya'll "I love the action-JRPGs!" dudes oughta play this month: Also this JRPG is criminally ignored and great: Have you played the 3DO version of Road Rash, or any of its ports? I've played Road Rash on Genesis and PS1, but never the 3DO version. I'll give it a shot next month.

I definitely thought about Brandish 2. I suspect that would be a great time.
