Xeogred Bro E.V.O.: Search for Eden creditsMusic Composer Koichi Sugiyama Music Arranger Motoaki Takenouchi Funny thing about Enix is a lot of their library is highly experimental / weird. I mean, they published Planet Laika. Dragon Quest was probably making so much money that they figured they might as well take chances on everything else that struck their fancy.

Title: Fortified ZonePlatform: Game Boy Region release played: USA Year of release: 1991 Developer: Jaleco Entertainment Publisher: Jaleco Entertainment Graphics: 4/5 Audio: 3/5 Challenge: 3/5 Fun factor: 3/5 Quick Thoughts: Fortified Zone is an over-head maze shooter, being the first game in the Ikari no Yousai series (sequels being Ikari no Yousai 2, Operation Logic Bomb: The Ultimate Search & Destroy, and BS Ikari no Yousai). In this game a male and a female commando have been sent to destroy an enemy fortress via four stages. The player is able to switch between the two protagonists, as Masato (male) can use special weapons while Mizuki (female) can jump over obstacles. The initial theme starts off "realistic military" but morphs into futuristic sci-fi as the stages progress. Players who enjoy negotiating mazes, while blowing robots away, should take a shot at Fortified Zone.
+Kinda like a shoot 'em up dungeon crawler. +Two protagonists to switch between. +Nice in game mapping system. +OST is pretty good overall. +Some impressive looking boss battles for Game Boy. -You can't move diagonally. -Enemies can shoot diagonally but you can't. -No auto-fire. -I sure would have liked a spread gun power up. -Not a fan of the pitch black rooms. Ex's time to beat: 35 minutes Ex's rating: 7/10

The Ikari no Yousai games are pretty fun. I remember reading about this one in Nintendo Power, was definitely one I wanted to play for a long time (and finally did).
I started up an SNES RPG last night that I've never actually finished - Robotrek. Not entirely sure why, I've owned the cart for years and years. I think my brother did actually beat it, except it was through emulation. But so far I really like what I've seen - I dig the combat balance between using swords, guns, and bombs, each of which take longer to recover from. I also like how you can move quickly and pick up items during battle and also be rewarded with more EXP for finishing a battle quickly before the timer counts down.
I know the game has some localization issues, but so far it's not too bad yet. Anyway, I may actually see this one out.

Guys, I didn't beat EVO yet...
I played Robotrek myself about 20 some years ago too. I also didn't beat it then but I remember it being cool.

Robotrek is cool. It was one of the last officially-released SNES RPGs I played (along with Spike McFang), it just looked lame to me, but it was a nice surprise. It's fun and quirky, and actually kind of a comedy (it was called Slapstick in Japan, not for nothing). Not especially long. And it's Quintet. IMO it's better than Illusion of Gaia, for example.

Yep, I'm aware, haha. Glad to get two votes of confidence in this one. I'm actually looking forward to digging in more this evening. Might look at shifting off the Analogue Pocket to a bigger screen, although it does look great on there.

The Ikari no Yousai games are pretty fun. I figured before taking on Operation Logic Bomb I would beat its predecessors first. It's fun to see how a game series progresses through its iterations. I beat that one back in the '90s on real hardware, but man I barely remember anything about it. Must have been fun for me to have bothered finishing it anyway. Hope it goes well for you.

Ikari no Yousai 2 is unironically the last retro game I purchased. Maybe I'll get to that one too.

Really wish I could play that supposed "Axelay 2" teased at the end of hard mode. Another super atmospheric shmup sounds so good right now.
So here's a list I made when I went through Shmup Junkie's huge video reviewing potentially every Genesis/Sega CD shmup. Any thoughts on these, feel free:
- Advanced Busterhawk Gleylancer (J) - Android Assault - The Revenge of Bari-Arm - Atomic Runner (we all know toei digs it) - Eliminate Down - Gaiares - Grind Stormer - Kolibri - Panorama Cotton (J) - Ranger X (I know of this one, just need to give it more time)
- Robo Alesa
- SoulStar - Space Invaders 91' - Sub-Terrania - Trouble Shooter - Twinkle Tale (J) - Whip Rush - Wings of Wor - Wonder Boy III - Monster Lair - Zero Wing

- Ranger X - Trouble Shooter - Twinkle Tale Of your list those are the only two I've beaten. Ranger X is rad ass but takes a minute to learn, it's not an instant pick up and play. Trouble Shooter I gave a 7/10, meaning it's decent. But I gave its sequel Trouble Shooter Vintage (AKA Battle Mania 2) an 8/10. I also gave Twinkle Tale a 7/10.
Have you already beaten Alien Soldier?
