Sony's been really good at entering game markets. Came out of nowhere with the PS1, took over within one generation. Came out of nowhere with the PSP, created the most popular non-Nintendo handheld ever.
I hate that I can't seem to get sales for the original Game Boy alone, because it always gets grouped with the GBC, a different system with its own library. The PSP is quoted at 80-82 million units, and the GB + GBC at 118 million... the PSP might even have outsold the original GB! It's on par with the GBA (81.5 mil). The DS made an absolute killing, though (154 million), and basically saved Nintendo.

Certainly possible that the PSP matched it, yep! Pokemon basically revived the Game Boy's fortunes, combined with the GBC. PSP was a fantastic system - I got so much mileage out of it. Then Sony completely botched it with the Vita, a system I wanted to love that was shown awful support and insanely expensive memory cards. I do wonder how much of the PSP's success was driven by the homebrew scene, though. Almost everyone I knew that owned one had it hacked. And if it wasn't... uh, I hacked it for them.

These are the 5th gen systems I truly like:
Game Boy Color Nintendo 64 PlayStation Saturn Virtual Boy
There's enough new-to-me games (or at least, games I like but haven't beaten yet) on those platforms to keep me busy for two years, let alone two months. So I'll be sticking with them for this theme. Referencing my HLTB (2013-2023 records at this point) for those platforms, here's some lesser known/lesser played recs I'll throw out:
GBC = SD Hiryu no Ken EX, Return of the Ninja
N64 = Sin and Punishment
PS1 = Jumping Flash!, The Adventure of Little Ralph, Deception III: Dark Delusion, The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, Dino Crisis 2, King's Field series, Umihara Kawase Shun ~second edition~, Armored Core series
SAT = Panzer Dragoon II Zwei, Guardian Heroes
VB = Jack Bros., Space Squash, Virtual Boy Wario Land

I can confirm that Jumping Flash is a cool and unique game, surreal first-person 3d platforming with ridiculously high jumps and FPS levels. I quit playing because of those, but it's nice.

The first person platforming does take some getting used to, but man can that mecha rabbit JUMP. Feels like you jump miles high. These were my thoughts from five years ago: Edit: Guess this could be a good opportunity to check out the sequels.

Now that Far Cry 2 is behind me, I can start on my first game for this CR: HLTB says this one takes about 8 hours. No idea if it's good, but I'm all about the theme. What's everybody else playing? Or intending to play?

We'll see if I have the steam for it, but two that are on my list:

MKR on Saturn does look great, always meant to play that one. Looking forward to seeing how it shakes out for you.

Rayearth is a great game. Some of the prettiest 2D graphics ever too.
First anime/manga I ever got into back in the day, just incidentally.

I didn't stick with Brave Fencer Musashi long when I tried it out a few years ago. Wonder what you'll make of it.
