e3expo.com/E3.htmlThe writing was on the wall the last several years. Major identity crisis' with too many cooks in the kitchen, the infatuation with "famous" people on the floor most gamers couldn't care about, them having full address leaks of attendees a few years ago. I bet Sony pulling out a few years ago was one of the biggest blows and the beginning of the end. Almost put this in the retro forum, since there's much nostalgia and prior relevance to discuss around E3 I'm sure. But both the death of physical media/magazines and rise of the internet really cut E3's legs from underneath them. That said, plenty of cons and shows like these still exist and are successful. So it still seems like more than half the blame on this burning crash is on their own hands. Crazy stuff. Anyone have any fond memories of E3? Any particular year or coverage?

My best memories of E3 are from the early and mid '90s, reading about the event in EGM magazine every year. EGM usually had multiple pages of coverage with lots of pictures, upcoming game info, anecdotal stories and photos of booth babes. I never attended an EGM (nor cared to, as I'm not a "con" kind of person) but always enjoyed reading what was there any given year. As a Simple Man™, when E3 banned booth babes... that was the end of it in my book. One EGM moment that still sticks with me today is all the hoopla Blizzard did for Starcraft: Ghost back in 2003, with a crazy expensive booth setup and amazing statue of the protagonist (in lieu of an actual flesh and blood booth babe): More photos of the statue: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarCraft:_GhostAll that money spent on promotion and the game's development hell nuked it into unreleased vaporware. Although back in 2020 there was a leak of a Ghost build in playable form: www.denofgeek.com/games/starcraft-ghost-leak-canceled-footage/

A little sad to see it go - I used to enjoy the info that would come out. Now, it seems to be supplanted by either direct-feed information or, um, The Game Awards? Mostly direct-feed, though - feels like a lot of this stuff is unnecessary now. I do believe they still have some of these going in Europe, though, like Gamescom.
Of course, before E3, it used to be gaming stuff would be at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). I don't think much comes out of that now, but maybe a few devs will start to slide back that way.

Yeah, for me E3 evokes mid '90s game coverage. Most iconic would be I think 1994, when the Playstation and Saturn were demo'ed. I have a special EGM issue all about it.

"HIDEO_KOJIMA @hideo_KOJIMA_EN Game Creator: 70% of my body is made of movies." lol Not sure if he still does it but he used to say that he tried to watch one new movie a day. In his case... I believe it.

Oh, right, how could I forget about TGS? How much do Western devs typically show there?
