I wasn't really tracking gaming media until the early 2000's. So, I mostly associate E3 with the Gamecube.

Oh, right, how could I forget about TGS? How much do Western devs typically show there? I don't think much. But there's also Gamescon (UK?) and PAX stuff across the states, etc. Like I was speculating... there still are these big shows throughout the world and they seem successful. So E3 just couldn't get their stuff together to course correct with the changing times I guess. Game Awards tends to have some big reveals thesedays too.
This maybe hurts indie devs and networking in person. But I've heard so many rumblings over the years, it sounds like it was ridiculously expensive to rent out a booth and some space on the floor there. It was funny how Xbox wasn't officially attending the last few shows, because they owned a building across the street or something. lol, so they were still involved to an extent or maybe had some stuff going on themselves, but didn't have to pay up for the space.

Oh, right, PAX is a big deal, too. I keep forgetting all these things! PAX is pretty good for indies, too.
