That's the best case scenario for a remake - the OGs back at it with some fresh blood and enough time to look at the material with fresh eyes (if you've done creative stuff before, you almost never really know how you feel about most of it past the initial moment of creation until enough time has passed that you've forgotten some of it). That's basically what happened with Rent A Hero on the Dreamcast, which was a lot better than the original IMO. I do hope they stick the landing with FFVII as a trilogy as it's an ambitious idea that could easily go wrong. I usually have no interest in modern Japanese RPGs for a variety of reasons, but watching the trailers, some of it does look a little cringe to me, but some of it admittedly looks really cool.

beat the stage 3 boss on my first try / thermal energy makes you feel invincible / get knocked around a bit but is there much tension / the mecha are fine / aiming is great / Lock on would make this boring You're a homie, but I disagree with everything you claimed there. Seems like Sarge didn't like this one either. Gonna need toei's opinion to settle the matter.

Sarge said he stopped after mission 1. Is that enough for us to judge games now? Think I cleared that mission in 10 minutes... Are you not blowing up the broken down water tower things filled with thermal energy? I was maxing out thermal hitting 9,999 in mission 2. Everything is constantly dropping thermal. How is this aspect being tough for you? What missions? Did you look into the aiming controls? There are three weird types I can't even remember off the top of my head. But they are all super different with the reticle aiming. I found one I liked and maxed out the sensitivity for it. Aiming is a breeze and really precise. Maybe it's also the new controller I'm using. Why would a lock on be good for a dual analog semi modern third person shooter? For any modern shooter. I don't see what you mean here.
I'm not acting like I'll change your mind at this point. I'm surprised you're still going, because this certainly doesn't read like a 6/10.

>Are you not blowing up the broken down water tower things filled with thermal energy? Yes. >How is this aspect being tough for you? What missions? Mission 1 and 2 were easy. The parts of LP that made me irritated so far; stage 3 boss, stage 4 boss, stage 6 >Did you look into the aiming controls? Yes and eventually settled on "Fixed" at speed 8/10 IIRC. The aiming just lacks the finesse and fine resolution of better 7th gen shooters I've played. >Aiming is a breeze and really precise. Maybe it's also the new controller I'm using. Probably because you're playing the fixed up PC version, at a high framerate, and high resolution, with a superior controller. This would factor into the equation. >Why would a lock on be good for a dual analog semi modern third person shooter? So you could lock onto enemy mechs, and lock onto the bosses to kite/strafe them. It's good for the same reason that lock-on is good in Dark Souls and Armored Core 6, and hell Ocarina of Time and Mega Man Legends even. Third person action games since the 5th gen have utilized lock-on, because it's an effective way to attack enemies in a 3D space. Also, all the Monster Hunter games have lock-on, and this game being MH influenced should have it too. But it does not to my knowledge. I'm still playing Lost Planet because it's a 6.5/10 for me at the moment (ergo not "terrible") and you talked the game up highly. So I'm still hoping by the end of the experience, it'll "click" and I'll understand your lauding of it. But if that doesn't happen, and I end up liking this game significantly less than you did, that's okay. I don't think this game is a flaming turd or anything dramatic. And not all my recs for you have been jams either. And perhaps toei (or any other HRG member for that matter) might actually agree with you on Lost Planet. Maybe it's just me with this one.

The 3rd Birthday came after Lost Planet and it's all about that lock-on, btw. The only things you aim manually are special weapons like the sniper rifles (of course), grenade launcher and whatever that thing is that comes up 2-3 times where you charge up for a few seconds and then absolutely devastate the giant monsters like it's nothing.

Ex : "Dark Souls and Armored Core 6, and hell Ocarina of Time and Mega Man Legends" That's some games comparison salad man lol. You're breaking my brain with this lock on thing. Did Vanquish even have it? I'm pretty sure no. Neither did Binary Domain or any of the Gears clones. I'd be at a loss on the dozens of third person survival horror games I've played that don't have lock on. A lot of these have aim assist, sure. But nothing like WinBack where you just literally tick over to targets and can shoot them, or 3rd Birthday which it probably does since you only have one analog stick; ideal in that design. Same with PN03. Yet I know I would have liked PN03 more with dual analog controls. It's fine with melee combat. But guns... this makes no sense to me. Guess I'll sleep on this and see if I remember any modern third person shooters with auto lock on. To me this is like modern Nintendo "Game plays itself easy mode".
toei : There's one joystick on the PSP for 3rd Birthday. There's two for Lost Planet. Let's put dates aside here, it's all about single vs dual joysticks. Dual joysticks eliminated the need to have auto lock on in most game genres with guns at least.
You guys are making me go Super Saiyan.

But guns... this makes no sense to me. see if I remember any modern third person shooters with auto lock on. To me this is like modern Nintendo "Game plays itself easy mode" Armored Core VI. Modern third person shooter that has lock-on. We both beat this last year; we both know AC6 is the complete opposite of "Modern Nintendo game plays itself easy mode". Despite AC6 having lock-on. My dude, don't get butthurt because someone doesn't like a game you do. You've dissed games I like in the past. It's not a personal thing. We are not our tastes in media.

3rd Birthday would be unplayable with twin sticks design, because it's too fast. You just wouldn't have time to aim in most situations. The whole game's timing is built with lock-on in mind, so it doesn't result in a "easy mode", it's just a natural part of the design. The guns that aim manually are for particular occasions for a reason. I like fast paced, so I like lock-on. But eventually I'll experience the pure manual aiming thing beyond the little bits I've already tried and I'll see how I like it. I do like aiming with the sniper rifle, it's a nice change of pace. No need to die your hair bright yellow and spike it with hair gel.

AC6 is different because you can fly around a lot. So I'll just accept I have the weird rules for "lock on". When I think of modern lock on games, I just picture rail shooters and such in my head. Not ever anything with some grunt on the ground over the shoulder.
I beat my first full run of AC6 without realizing there was a hard lock on. Must have missed a tutorial blurb at some point. So that made the game a little extra sweaty. Couldn't believe it, I laughed when I discovered it on NG+. And used the heck out of it then. Made the bosses easier to track.
A lock on in Lost Planet would annoy me with the dozens of flying bug things all over.
I don't care if you flush Lost Planet tonight. Could even be a 7/10 for me. You kept asking what makes it great for me, I try to explain and figure out your problems with the game. Just different vibes for us with this one.
toei : I shouldn't insist that a lock on makes everything instantly easier. But yes in the modern dual stick design sense that is in my head and I can't convey to you guys, like all the survivor horror stuff I play, I think an auto lock on would make such stuff extremely boring.

So I do have thoughts about FFXVI, although I've not played it - I think a series can give up too much of its core identity and lose its way, and I think that's what has happened with Final Fantasy. I think this is less a problem with Parasite Eve, though, because it never really had a chance to establish a true identity. It's kind of the same way I feel about Dragon Quest - change it up too much, and it ceases to be that series. I'm totally cool with spinoff titles experimenting, but I feel like mainline games need to have some identifiable hook to the past, and turning the series into a DMC clone (even though I dig that series!) feels wrong.
