This one is just as it's listed on the tin. We're moving to 4th gen territory, baby! Also known as one of the greatest gaming eras ever, that of the eternal playground arguments between the Genesis and SNES (and that weird kid that owned a TurboGrafx-16) and all-time classics that still hold up to this day. (And some real stinkers, but we try not to mention them in polite company.)
Coupled with this is a fan translation theme. All systems are on the table, but the SNES in particular has received an absolute metric ton of fan translations. It's littered with spectacular games worth lending your time to. Personal recommendations include Front Mission: Gun Hazard, Treasure of the Rudras, Dragon Quest VI, Ganbare Goemon 2/3, Holy Umbrella: Dondera's Wild, Monstania, Magical Pop'n... lots of fun stuff. And lest we leave out the other systems, the Genesis sports King Colossus, Monster World IV, Twinkle Tale, and a retranslated Streets of Rage 3, and the TG-16/CD has some interesting recent translations like Private Eye Dol, the two Yuna games, as well as a translation of Rondo of Blood and ARPGs like Xak III and Ys IV.

That was long my favorite generation, though I've gained a lot of love for the PSX in recent years.
I've beaten a ton of fan-translated SNES RPGs, there are many, many good ones. At one point I'd played basically everything, but there are a few that have accumulated on my to play list since I stopped playing as many RPGs: Last Bible III, Far East of Eden Zero, Glory of Heracles IV, G.O.D., Dark Half and Bushi Seiryuuden. I don't really plan to hit up any of them soon since I'm still playing Legend of Dragoon and I have other RPGs to get to first (Samurai Shodown RPG, Persona 2: IS). Maybe I'll play Tengai Makyo, though. That's a big recent PCE-CD fan translation.

Yeah, definitely feel free to play on any system you want. There's a lot of fifth gen translations that have hit recently.

I like this theme. I'll look into non-RPG stuff, as I'm currently deep into an 8th gen JRPG already.

I feel there's a surprising amount of those out there, too. I'll probably be hitting up more action-oriented stuff myself. That recently-translated Melfand Stories looks like one I might like.

I'm with Ex and like the idea of tackling some non-RPG's here. I can go through my lists in the last few years since I've hit up some cool ones.
Had a solid time with this one last year:

Tried Melfand Stories very quickly, and... so far, not impressed. Will try a different character and see if I like it better. Whip girl seems pretty stiff.

Charming graphics and music but it just doesn't play well and the level design is very boring. I made 2-3 attempts and I just can't keep playing it for more than maybe 3 levels.

Ah, glad I'm not taking crazy pills. Seems like the HG101 entry isn't very high on it, either. I'll still try to give it a go again this evening.
EDIT: Alright, that's done. Melfand Stories is a game that looks okay, but there are some stylistic things I don't love like the main character sprites. They all have different ranges and speeds, and one character can be better than another in certain spots. It's also not a hard game - you'll die a fair amount, but you also earn a lot of continues every time you hit 20,000 points (score resets on a continue), so despite playing pretty badly in spots, I got through it first time.
Really, though, it's a game that invites comparisons to, say, Capcom's King of Dragons, except in single-plane 2D. So maybe that combined with their Willow. But it doesn't feel all that great to play - I found attacks quite unresponsive, and I thought the enemy patterns were pretty blah, too. I think this is a sub-par game that is elevated a bit by the presentation, but I'm just trying to imagine how disappointed a Japanese kid would have been to get this game in 1994. It's embarrassingly slight on top of it all, clocking in at around half-an-hour, although at least there's another route through the game.
Anyway, if y'all haven't gathered, I didn't love this one. I'll give it a 4.5/10, with the graphics helping pull it out of the doldrums slightly. This would have been much better as an arcade game that moved quicker.

All style no substance, haha. I still want to give that one a look myself.
Has anyone here played Psycho Dream? It looks good and bad at a glance. The sound effects seem kind of annoying and the combat looks a little weird but the rest looks kind of solid.
