Loved the look of the water dungeon areas, even if it being mazey didn't surprise me.

In a lot of ways, it almost looks like it could be an SNES or TG-16 game. They made some great use of colors that pop.

You guys ever play this one? Looks pretty solid:
I played the first SNES beat em' up. It was alright. Saw there's a sequel (R) and the Genesis has a beat em' up too.
Hmm, only three pages of Genesis translations over the years and several repeats/reduxes at that, with one page being mostly those PS2 side story things haha. I don't think I'd ever get too into 16bit strategy games nowadays and a mere controller in hand, but they always look really cool visually.

Yeah, I beat that Sailor Moon RPG about 20 years ago. 2003 or 2004. I actually thought it was pretty good. I was surprised, as I didn't have any interest in the source material, but back then I just played every SNES RPG. It's better than other RPGs based on anime series on the SNES, like Ranma 1/2 or Magic Knight Rayheart. The Genesis beat-'em-up is kind of a remixed version of the SNES game, with some of the same levels and some different ones. It's like Hyperstone Heist to Turtles in Time, except of course not as good. The second SNES beat-'em-up is a lot like the first. There's even a different arcade beat-'em-up by a different developer, which has impressive visuals but is also just okay.
I'm curious about Lord Monarch on the Genesis. It might be interesting, but I don't know. The best Genesis fan translation is probably King Colossus, the action RPG. Really good.

I played a decent way into Another Story way back, and yeah, it's actually quite solid.

Cool to hear you guys dug it. Wonder if it had any Square staff? That battle screen looks super SaGa/Final Fantasy influenced...
In the brief research I did tonight, I was really digging the look of Rent A Hero for Genesis. Looks a bit like the Shadowrun games. But also a bit longer than I'd like right now.
Kind of in a Genesis mood in general and I have a few ideas for some stuff after Monster World IV.
Dug up some posts from toei in 2018 about Dahna Megami Tanjou. I was looking into that one too, looks worth checking out for sure.

I replayed Rent A Hero last year. It's cool but the Dreamcast remake is way better. I consider it the precursor to the Yakuza series, or the missing link between Shenmue and Yakuza, and a lot of the same staff worked on it. Dahna is dope, just gotta get used to the controls.
No former Square staff on Another Story, but one of the four game designers worked on Arc the Lad 2 after, then joined Square and worked on Front Mission 2 & 3, FFX, and some Kingdom Hearts game.

The more I play Dr. Slump, the more I like it. It's refreshing to play a game where you're mostly just chilling in a wacky world full of ridiculous people and getting into funny situations, with very low stakes. Just now I met a tiny flying imp who told me he was a demon who came to earth to kill people. The demon king said he'd give him 5 yen for a man, 30 for a woman and 200 for a young girl. He asks you to take him to one. Arale, being incredibly naive and always looking for something new to do, agrees. So you go to school and find your friend in the yard. The demon flies up to her and attempts to sell her on it. "Do you want to die? It's free and it'll only take a minute." She tells him to go away and explains that you don't need to be friends with weirdoes, so he asks you to find somebody else, who ends up doing an accidental stomp attack on him, which teaches you how to use that move. You're constantly learning new moves by witnessing someone perform an action for the first time. There's lots of little memorable events like this, it's very imaginative and even though it may be "for children", it is in a Toriyama way, meaning it's a little gross and a little stupid (lots of shit jokes - I also had to collect 16 poops for two space aliens to bring back and study just before), as children are if we're being real, and it's often pretty funny. If you try hard to remember, you probably did some weirdo stuff as a little kid too, not knowing any better. But Arale is so devoid of malice that you can't dislike her.

Sounds hilarious. I like assuming some of these story arcs are based off an anime episode or some chapters in the manga I bet. Maybe this series has more potty humor while Toriyama saved the pervy stuff for Dragon Ball, hah.
