Ex bone loves 8-bit ARPGs, though. I tried Esper Dream 2 a few times and I was never really convinced. I had forgotten about Gargoyle's Quest 2, I do like that one. But that goes to show that the only good NES ARPGs, for my tastes, are side-scroller RPGs.

If you wanna play Ys I through III on consoles, go SMS for Ys I, Fami for II and III. Fami Ys I is slop.
Also fire up the mf'ing EGG CONSOLE for Ys I & II and Xak!!!!!

Not Turbo CD for Ys 1 & 2? That's the one I played. The SMS version of 1 does look and sound pretty nice, though. For III I like the Genesis version.

I liked Esper Dream 2 myself. Played through it not long after I got my EverDrive N8.

I've only beaten Ys1 once, via the old Ys Eternal PC remake. It looked and sounded nice. I haven't hit up Ys2 yet because I've read it has some byzantine "puzzle" bullshit in its latter half that didn't sound fun. But I'm thinking the PSP version of Ys2 is how I'd do it. I think the best version of Ys3 is the TGCD one.

Oh yeah, Turbo Ys is best. I was speaking earlier about my favorite 8-bit versions specifically.
Ys II is fantastic but the "Palace of Solomon" (or "Salmon") dungeon that takes up the second half of the game can be maddening.

"Palace of Solomon" (or "Salmon") dungeon that takes up the second half of the game can be maddening Yeah that's what I read about that put me off playing it. I like for Ys to be two things; fast and direct. The best games in the series (including the modern ones) are that.

Now that I'm in love with Y's VIII, I find it interesting that Yuzo Koshiro only worked with Falcom in the early days? Has he ever done anything for them or with the Y's series after the first two? I'm guessing some iconic themes have been recycled and remixed over the years though? I still don't think I'm going back to these old games since I already tried and didn't stick with them. But yeah always respected them at least haha, now even moreso since I finally like one a lot.

I don't think he did, but the main guys behind Ys 1 & 2 then started Quintet, and he did Actraiser with them. That's also why Ys 3 was so different, since new people were in charge.

A eureka moment for me haha. Y's III always looks like an odd duck. Seems like it has plenty of fans though. Are there Judeo Christian elements in Y's 1-2's story? Quintet's favorite.
