With NES, Follin was heavy on the layered arpeggios (as many C64 European composers were), but his real skill was using the PCM and noise channel combined to form a reasonable facsimile of a drum sample.

There actually is some appearances and newer interviews with him out there nowadays. Just a shame he didn't stick to chiptunes throughout the years. His brother contributed to some of the games he worked on as well I believe.

We've discussed this emulator a few times on HRG, but never knew until today Jobs promoted it.

A reminder that GOG has zero DRM.

Yep yep.
At the very least, though, I do think SNK titles can have their ROMs pulled out regardless of store platform if you want to use them somewhere else.
That 40th anniversary collection is also really interesting - it's a window into SNK before the Neo Geo, when they were doing more than mostly just fighters. Pretty uneven output, but still fascinating. I've always liked P.O.W., for instance. Athena is just bad, in my opinion, although the NES game is even worse. Also to their credit, they do include arcade and console versions for many of the games, and also have Crystalis in there, which I think rocks.

Ex That makes two of us. I honestly don't think the NES has any great ARPGs, at least not in the traditional style. The only one I liked was Zelda 2, and I'm thinking I'll probably like Faxanadu too. The only 8-bit action RPGs I like originated on Japanese computers. Ys 1 & 2, etc. But even then, I always thought it was a bit overrated compared to Ys IV, of which I liked both of the original versions a good deal (I know you didn't). That cancelled game is interesting. That girl jumps exactly like Lara Croft, but it looks more shooter-oriented and more linear in terms of level design. It actually looks like it would have been a pretty good game.

Yeah, I like what I'm seeing in the video. Looks like something I would have enjoyed.
I haven't played Crystalis yet myself. It always looks cool from afar but knowing my track record with RPG's on the NES, I don't know if I'd like it much and it'd probably just make want to go and play all the awesome 16bit ARPG's out there. I'll give it a look someday though.

I honestly don't think the NES has any great ARPGs, at least not in the traditional style. I'll probably like Faxanadu too. I'll say Faxanadu is a good action-JRPG for NES, with the caveat being I haven't played through it in decades. I got the game for my 11th birthday (34 years ago) and promptly beat it over that same weekend. I recall the atmosphere being surreal and somber, lots of earth tones and an esoteric (though pleasant) OST. I'm sure by now there's a good English fan translation that will clean up the text. Worth a try. Other than Faxanadu, I've played and sampled most NES/FC action-JRPGs available. The majority are not particularly good. Radia Senki was awful close to being decent, but its combat system gets to be a drag after a while. However, I do consider Madoola no Tsubasa and Gargoyle's Quest II to be great action-JRPGs. And I've heard tale that Esper Dream 2 is solid but I've not played it yet. Pretty sure this 8/10 review is bonesnapdeez 's : gamefaqs.gamespot.com/nes/570665-esper-dream-2-aratanaru-tatakai/reviews/167603 I've also not played Faria yet.
