Fascinating stuff, for sure. I love peeks behind the curtain to see how all this stuff operated.

Here's a site I love that some of y'all may not know about. The Video Game Den: www.videogameden.com/It's in English but dedicated to Japanese games. There's a very narrow focus so it's not an overwhelming amount of stuff -- just Famicom, Super Famicom, and PCE. The "reviews" are great as they not only feature the writer's personal opinion, but are also full screenshots, game artwork, commercial videos, omake content scans, and more. A lovely resource. I also really like The CRPG Addict. Basically, one dude trying to play "all" the CRPGs chronologically. Obviously impossible, but he's covered tons of retro stuff. Plus, he resides in Maine, so I approve: crpgaddict.blogspot.com/Yeah, it's a blog. But he has wrap-up reviews after each game finished so it can be navigated and read like a traditional website, should you choose. In fact, the summation review entries are the ones I enjoy most. They're very well-written and thorough. The blog entries can get tedious; I don't need to read three pages about a guy struggling with a single Might and Magic dungeon. As an aside, I also wish he wouldn't cover JRPGs at all. He only plays those that were available in English and on computer systems, so he's obviously only experiencing a very small sampling and he just doesn't "get" the genre at all. He begins his first Sorcerian post by confessing that he hates anime. Yikes. All that aside, if you wanna read about classic Western dungeon-crawlers and whatnot, there's no better place. Finally, I love finding old Japanese fan sites. Like this one: www.saturn.dti.ne.jp/~dastard/

CRPG Addict is really great, that's the site that revealed Beneath Apple Manor's existence to me. Which is technically a roguelike that proceeds Rogue. I ended up playing through and beating Beneath Apple Manor, it was a great game. I hadn't heard of the other two sites, I'll check into them. Thanks for the info. Edit: Woah, Videogameden is great! I can see myself wasting lots of time on this site.

Ex, I know you're a Phantasy Star IV fan - shmuplations.com/ has just updated with 3 PS-related interviews. The PS4 and composer retrospectives are especially interesting. I had no idea Ippo was a woman!

Oh, yeah, the CRPG addict makes for good reading. Sometimes I forget about it, but when I picked up the Gold Box games I did a lot of reading there.
EDIT: Ooh, the Video Game Den looks really nice. I'm gonna be browsing that for sure.

Man I forget all about USGamer. It's still going huh? I stopped reading it after Pete left. I thought I read Jeremy left it too actually. Anyway, yeah, FFVI was for adults? I can buy that. (Actually I did buy it back in 1994.)

Yeah, they're still kicking, but yeah, Pete left, Jeremy left, I'm pretty sure Bob Mackey isn't there anymore, etc. (I'm not lamenting the loss of Mackey; some of his political views and the way he went about it were insufferable.) Nadia Oxford still does a good job with a lot of the RPG stuff. There's still political stuff that sneaks in from time to time, but I'm resigned to that fate no matter where I go. It's also why I appreciate that we have decided not to do that here, and that it got nixed over at Racketboy.
