Can you describe system behavior when the load fails? Any visual or audible feedback on screen? Continuous clicking or whirring noises in the unit itself?

Ooh, nice pickup. Love that system, much maligned though it may be.
As for the loading, does the lens look clean? Could be gunky, but I dunno, a lot of Sega systems tend to have good lasers in them. My Sega CD systems aren't nearly as picky as my Duo or PSX. Also, are you using CD-Rs or legit games, and are they in good shape? I've got some older CD-Rs that don't read in my Dreamcast, for example.
If it's gear grinding you're hearing, there's a little switch the lens hits that is supposed to tell it when to stop, and it can be carefully bent back into position. Mine used to gear-grind... and then it just stopped. Go figure!

Can you describe system behavior when the load fails? Any visual or audible feedback on screen? Continuous clicking or whirring noises in the unit itself? It would take me to the Sega CD menu and prompt me to "press start". I would press start, the screen would turn black, and the disc drive would remain silent. It would stay that way forever until I power cycled the Sega CD. But when I tried to reproduce the problem this morning I couldn't get it to happen again. Maybe it just magically works now? My other model 2 Sega CD used to have that problem. But I found a video someone uploaded to youtube explaining how to fix it and I took care of it.

Buy one, get one free over at GameStop on retro games right now. Unfortunately, the way stuff stacks is awful. If you load up your cart, the free items will always be the lowest-price games. Absolutely kills it for me right now; I was going to go for Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and King's Field, but come up shy of the free shipping as well, so the chance that the disc sucks for KF combined with that kills it.
I did end up getting a combo of Quackshot, Uniracers, Power Rangers (SNES), and Goof Troop. Under $30 shipped, so I can live with that.

Yep. I think I'm going to make sure I get good copies for that; I've had some good luck, and some bad, with disc-based games at GS.
In retrospect, I probably should have found another couple of $12 games to add to get the free shipping, but I don't know if there was anything major that I wanted that badly.

Well, that's some nice art, anyway... but yes, the game itself is terrible.
In retrospect, they had Lord of the Rings, Vol. 1 for $11.99, which is also a terrible game, but it at least would have filled another hole in my SNES RPG library.
Unfortunately, a lot of the really good games I wanted to snag were already sold out. Stuff like Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge, Chocobo Dungeon 2, Castlevania Chronicles, King's Field II, and so on.
