Xeogred I figure this one would be a hit for you. The predecessor Battle Mania (released in USA as Trouble Shooter) is also worth playing. It's not quite as good as this sequel, but it's above average and worth any vintage shmup lover's time.

It's not quite as good as this sequel, but it's above average and worth any vintage shmup lover's time. Looks more primitive but still like some quality gaming from skimming a video, plus I really enjoyed the gimmick with the two girls in jetpacks, which this one was doing too. I'll definitely check it out sometime.
I think I just have a lot of traditional shmups to hit up on the Genesis now, which is rich in that genre. Gaiares sounds like one of the best ones I haven't played yet.

I was just disappointed with the second game for being so easy. Maybe I should replay it some day, though. The first is somewhat harder (but not hard by shmup standards I guess) and is a pretty good game. You can tell both are real labors of love.
Speaking of Genesis shmups, you've played Elemental Master before, right?
As for Forgotten Worlds, the original arcade cabinet featured this rotary thing to control the weapon, and I think it would make it a much better game than the console ports. Playing it on a standard controller is awkward.

Battle Mania Daiginjou is legit. And I'll take that opportunity to once again post my favorite song from it.

The jingles in the background of all those heavy riffs really makes it for me, then when the ancient Eastern melodies come in. Man yeah, the OST was incredible. toei : If it's Techno Soft you can almost assume I've beaten it haha. At least Genesis wise and some of their arcade games (Hyper Duel, awesome stuff, but super easy). I've hit up Elemental Master a few times, it's freaking awesome. Ex : Yup some obscure looking choices there! I beat Ranger X last year and enjoyed it a fair bit. I had to look up Arcus Odyssey right away, that one might be calling my name soon. This unique more experimental stuff is what I'm feeling right now. Here's a blast from the past, always liked cruising this site back in the day for some info: www.shmups.com/xenocidefiles/megadrive.html

Hellfire is a solid Genesis shmup, worth checking out. I never beat it though. And Undeadline is like Elemental Master if it was incredibly hard.

It's a Wolf Team game, so you know it's at least decent. If you're looking for more fantasy+shmup kind of stuff, I'll mention again the Dungeon Explorer games on TG16/TGCD, they fit the bill. They aren't true shmups, but the way you attack and the veracity of the tempo is shmup-y. And they incorporate lite fantasy RPG stuff too. You'd probably like them.

Definitely looks pretty cool, kind of adjacent to ARPG's and shmups. So that's a mix I could get into.
Still think I need to hit up the Neutopia games too, since they sound solid.

To be clear, Dungeon Explorer is Gauntlet + RPG. Enemies keep coming out of pods until you destroy the pods. Pretty sure they're multiplayer too. If you find the first game too basic, the second has a more developed RPG side (bigger world, more towns, story and characters).
While it looks like early 16-bit at a glance (at least the sprites), Neutopia is NES Zelda, not SNES Zelda. If you're fine with that you should like them. 2 is a bit better than 1.
