I checked my game library, these are the Tales of games I own legit copies of: Just for the record.

Yeah, you're in good shape there. If you want to see how the series has evolved over the years in this "modern" branch, start with Symphonia. And try not to notice that Lloyd's voice actor is the voice of Robin in Teen Titans. Of the ones I've beaten, Legendia is the weakest of the bunch, but you might like it, who knows? The combat is very different - you usually control a sword-wielder by default, but here, you get a punchy melee guy. I'm pretty sure every one of these lets you control whoever you want, though, including if you want to take up full-time healing duties. The reason Legendia feels different is that it wasn't helmed by the normal Tales team, it also had folks from the Soul Calibur/Tekken teams heavily involved.

Because ShakeWell posted something about the M82 on Twitter, I got on an NES kick for a bit. I just made a run through Mega Man 4. It's still very good, although the Charge Shot fundamentally changed the way the series plays - sometimes for the better, sometimes not. It's still better than most of the library, and I do think that while some fatigue was setting in, there was some nice creativity on tap here. Gonna give it a 8.5/10. I have to ding it slightly for the soundtrack (not nearly as good as MM2/3, although some standout tunes) and a final boss I didn't care much for, although now that I think about it, this may have been the last game that required you to use a boss weapon to win instead of relying on the Charge Shot.

I've enjoyed all the NES Mega Mans (yes even the first one.) There is definitly a style divide between the regular and charged-shot mega mans. Almost different types of games.

They at least nerfed the POWER of the charge shot after MM4. I don't think I've ever bothered with the boss-weaknesses in MM4 because the charge shot is so overpowered, heh. It has such a weird and ugly sprite too. Thankfully, it looks more like the Hadouken and awesome in MM5+.
For me, the Mega Man games are the apex of the NES library. Perfection.
I agree the charge shot gives it a different vibe though. Initially I don't think I liked how they ditched it again in MM9-10, but now in retrospect I like that they don't have it. MM3 is after all my ultimate favorite. The slide opens up level design ideas but yeah, not having the charge shot makes it a little different in a cool way.

I always thought it was more powerful in MM5, myself. It's so huge, you can pretty much hit anything. (This is a detriment in a few instances, though.) paulofthewest: Speaking of Mega Man, I ran through it last night. Predictably, I hit choke points at the same spots I always do - the Yellow Devil (died there three times) and the boss rush at the end. Yellow Devil I got close multiple times, though, and just got super sloppy on each death thinking I had it. But he knocks huge chunks off your life, so things can go bad in a hurry. The boss rush, though, almost always comes down to Guts Man doing what he's supposed to. Sometimes he'll crowd you and there's just not much you can do about it, and dodging his throws is really tough. And you're probably not sporting much life because you're guaranteed to take damage against Fire Man, too. I actually had to think hard about what I'd rate it. I almost went with an 8/10, but in hindsight I think it's a little too rough to give it the "great" moniker. It's more "very good", which means 7.5 from me. And I need some wiggle room since I gave MM4 an 8.5/10.

I guess that's a catch, a bigger catch.*drum roll* But I'm still pretty certain MM4's damage output is a lot higher on contact, especially with bosses.
MM6 also has the "power armor" suit that can do some serious damage up close haha.
It's been a while since I binged MM1-6. I gotta get those all up on HLTB too!
I agree the MM1 Wily Stages / boss rush is BRUTAL! That's the game I know the least. Elec Man is the one that scares me, dude kills you in like 2-3 hits.

Oh, yeah, Elec Man is always terrifying if you're not using the pause trick. I was legitimately mortified on both fights, because I remember how hard he hits.
I didn't notice any discrepancy in damage output - I'm pretty sure the MB does three HP of damage against bosses in MM4-6, unless my memory is just completely shot. I think, though, that MM5 sees you lose your charge when you get hit, something that doesn't happen in MM4.

Every time with Yellow Devil it takes me a couple of tries before getting the pattern down. An ya, that amount of life it takes is rough.
3 and 5 are my favorite, but I think it is more because as a young kid I'd mow lawns until I had enough money to buy games. Once I got a W2 job, I collected the rest.
