I wish I'd been able to mow lawns for money, but certain someones complained about us cutting into their business. My first one was MM2, but I also had a cousin with MM3, and we combined with some other cousins on a FuncoLand order and got the original that way. I've actually got that copy still. By the time MM4 rolled around, no one cared about NES anymore. Got MM4 in a Walmart sans box, MM5 from a Kay-Bee Toys, and MM6 from... honestly, I think I've forgotten! I didn't notice any discrepancy in damage output - I'm pretty sure the MB does three HP of damage against bosses in MM4-6, unless my memory is just completely shot. You're right. So this confirms 2020 is the worst year ever for me. I forgot my Mega Man lore. Dude, you've probably forgotten more about Mega Man than I'll ever know. And I know you're way better at them than me. (I mean, I ain't bad, but I've seen what you can do.) I'd actually completely forgotten that you maintain the charge shot in MM4 until I played it the other day. I was legitimately surprised when I found that I could still unleash it despite tanking a hit.

I bought many a SNES JRPG back in the '90s via money made from lawn mowing. I distinctly remember keeping ads for SoM and FF3 in my pocket while working, for MOWtivation. I've only beaten MM1-3 on NES. I tried to beat them all in a month years ago. I got burned out because the games are so damn similar to one another. Each one is more like mission pack DLC than a brand new game. I do understand changes came like the charge shot and Rush and stuff, but still, the core gameplay is the same from MM1-6 at least. From what I sampled of the later games. I am NOT disparaging them though. All NES MM games are high quality stuff. High quality cookie cutter stuff.

It really is remarkable how much Mega Man 2 improves on the original. Don't get me wrong, the original is very good! But MM2 resides on a whole other tier. The fact that this is only the second game in the series (and is still considered by many to be the high point, probably including me) makes it all the more impressive. Yeah, 10/10 here.

I agree that MM2 represents the biggest leap in original series quality. But how much better is MM3 than MM2? Or MM4 than MM3? After MM2's leap, the rest of the NES sequels are no longer big improvements, so much as potboiler reiterations.

I have no issues with reiterations when they're that good, though. I view any series that does that much like any other - if it's high-quality entertainment, I will play them. Super Mario, Castlevania, Zelda, Metroid, Sonic, the works.

After 2 it was really level design. They did add some mechanics (Gavity man's level in MM5 comes to mind). Although, the game was so good for its time why would you mess that up?
The jump to the X series was pretty huge, but same situation.

MM3 wins because it introduces my favorite Mega Man character.
I've always hated Zero for being the more popular red "S Rank Hunter" who generally just tells X what to do while he's off somewhere else probably eating pizza with the TMNT gang doing nothing. Then he's easy mode in MMX4-6. But the GBA Zero series is legit.

Just throwing that out there, but Zero is kind of the Knuckles to Mega Man's Sonic.

You're either suggesting Knuckles is better than Sonic, or another lame red wannabe Proto Man type...

The jump to the X series was pretty huge, but same situation. I agree, MMX was the first huge improvement to the MM series since MM2. But then it all started again, as many more MMX sequels were basically just new level packs. Some people enjoy sequels that are remixed carbon copies of what came before. Some people want sequels to bring forth innovation and clever new mechanics. While I don't begrudge the former, I'm of the latter camp.
