So if you're on HRG you're already a bit of a gaming, uh, enthusiast. Chances are you've been around the ol' research block, more than a few times. In doing so, it's likely you've found some games you were surprised you hadn't heard of before, and were impressed or intrigued by. In that regard, why not share them? Chances are if you do, your contributions will be news to at least someone reading your post. Failing that, it could at least remind people said game(s) exist. I for one am always interested in learning about games I didn't know existed, and am delighted to see old platforms still delivering new (to me) experiences. In that regard, let's keep this initial thread about 8-bit and 16-bit platforms (if this thread proves popular, we can make others covering other generations). So, got any hidden gems or obscurities you'd like to share with the class?

The only two that come to mind at the moment are Saturn games. Other than that, I'll have to think about it / look at my files.
Oh, maybe this arcade game, AB Cop:
It's similar to Chase HQ, except with a hoverbike, meaning you chase criminals on the road and ram into their vehicle to destroy them with the help of a turbo button. It's also much more playable, and doesn't require that you pump quarters in every few seconds because the timer is always running out. Definitely worth a playthrough (it's pretty short, as most arcade games are). Of course it uses Sega's scaling technology, so it looks great. MAME it!
Oh, maybe this too:
Sorceror's Kingdom, an obscure Genesis RPG that got an NA release and all. Ugly graphics, but I remember it as being a fun game. It plays mostly like a traditional RPG, where you walk around towns and dungeons and whatnot, but there are monsters hanging around and when you come near enough to one it gets into a SRPG battle. It's short-ish (I think 15-20 hours) and I enjoyed it at the time.

Hmmm... I'll have to think about this one a bit to not mention the usual suspects. I have to think Demon's Crest is pretty well known by now.
I also like some of the 8-bit action-RPGs like Crystalis (probably the most well known), Willow (less known despite being loosely based on the movie), and The Magic of Scheherazade (peak Culture Brain).

Ooh, here's a good one I played through a while back. Cosmo Police Galivan. It's a Metroid-ish NES game that didn't cross the pond, but did receive a fan translation. I'd definitely give it a shot if you enjoyed NES Metroid.

How about Holy Umbrella: Dondera's Wild? Very good sort of exploratory platformer for Super Famicom. Once again, fan translation is available. I recommend this one a lot, it gets quite good once you get rolling.

I love when I'm seeing Sarge, especially with that Cosmo Police Galivan (even though the BGM seems rather super upbeat for a Metroidvania haha).
Definitely some cool picks from toei too. I think I should be able to roll out dozens of recommendations but for some reason nothing is coming to mind yet.

I think we mentioned it here once, but Holy Umbrella is one of my favorite SNES games. So fun.
Is anybody here not familiar with Marvelous? It's a pretty uniquel adventure game that uses A Link to the Past's engine, however it's focused on (mostly) light puzzles and story advancement. You control a group of kids staying on an island as part of a school outing who decide to search for the treasure a pirate is rumored to have buried there. It's got an offbeat tone and is quite cleverly constructed. First game to have Eiji Aonuma as a lead (he later took over the Zelda series). Also fan-translated.

I beat Marvelous a few years ago. It was mostly a good time. I concur good recommendation for SNES fans.

While it's a spin-off of a more established series, I'd say Kid Dracula and Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-Kun are really fun platformers in the Castlevania universe, although with a cutesy spin to them. Oh, dang, that also reminds me of Mitsume Ga Tooru, a fantastic Natsume-developed platformer for Famicom.
