Weird fun fact, Briganty is the only game I've played so far that I just could not get to translate, no matter how hard I tried. I was able to hook the game, but the translation was a mess, to the point that I couldn't get anything meaningful from it. I tried every text-cleaning extension I could with Textractor, and even signed up for a free trail of DeepL to use over Google Translate (Which I tested in other games, and I'm excited as it does seem noticably better), but Briganty just refused to cooperate. And, as usual, some cool tunes.

I like those big chunky PC-98 sprites - it really looks like the battle cutscenes in the Farland Story games, except you actually control it in real time. Looking at a video, though, the scrolling isn't great, and the screen is having a hard time keeping up when you dash. But things like scrolling always seemed to be common limitations with all the old Japanese computers (the MSX in particular), so it comes with the territory. The hit detection seems super loose, too. Nonetheless, I'd probably give it a shot if it were translated.

Action games are particularly tricky on the PC-98, since there are so many emulators, and so many settings to play around with, that drastically affect things like smoothness and speed and all that. I won't say Briganty is smooth by any means, but I've seen videos of it that looked much worse than what I played. For anyone not wanting to mess with a ton of stuff to get games working, I've found the default settings of np2sxnt to work pretty well with action games, and thats what I used for this. It also auto-detects controllers and all that jazz. I tested Briganty years ago and didn't stick with it because it felt like the emulation was off, and when I tested it in that version of neko project today I was pleased enough with the results to play it through. I do really want to play the Farland Story games, I just need to figure out how to patch them with the translation. I don't remember exactly what the issue was, but I wasn't able to get the patch working last time I tried.

IIRC the translation's readme explains the patching process pretty well. It's not like console games, you have to replace certain files yourself in the game disks. You might even be able to find prepatched disks.
Anyway, while they look nice, they're not very good, mostly because they're so ridiculously easy that they become completely mindless. Considering how long battles get in SRPGs, that's a lot worse than a mindless action game. The later ones (5-6) do improve a bit on certain things, and Farland Symphony, a much later game for Windows (XP, I think?) that's also fan-translated is actually very good. I always recommend it, though I don't think anyone's tried it on my recommendation yet. It deserves more love.

Those are some slick-looking sprites. Good to know that the H-scenes can be disabled, too - now I wish there were a fan translation for it!

I've been lurking and reading these. This chapter of gaming history creates such conflicted feelings for me because while it couldn't be farther from something I'd actually want to play (due to a plethora of reasons such as my disinclination toward graphic novels as a genre or the sexually explicit nature of the PC-98's software library), I find it fascinating in a way that I love to read about it. The music samples you've shared are exactly the kind of thing I jam out to and the pixel artwork is a sight to behold. Keep covering these.
