Xeogred Dante is totally optional in SMT3. He can be as big or small a part of your game as you wish. You meet him a certain point, then you can decide to let him join your team, or not join your team. I beat his ass and told him to get lost. Never saw Dante again after that.

Yeah, ultimately I've always figured it was basically a goofy cross over like that and nothing too special.

My understanding is that he lacks some very crucial skills to make him good in the end game.

I really hope they don't mess with the base game balance, or add "quality of life" features. "Difficulty – “Normal” is the standard difficulty level, while “Hard” Is the highest difficulty level. A “Merciful” difficulty level that allows inexperienced players to dive into the story without worry will also be available as free downloadable content." ( source)
"Dive into the story without worry" translated from PR speak = "Aww, is the mountain too hard to climb kids? Here, have an escalator." Downloading that difficulty is installing a shit stain on perfection.

Seems lame but if Normal is the standard PS2 Normal, isn't that still fine?
EDIT: I read the post wrong. I thought it was an additional harder difficulty which could be cool for returning fans or something. But I guess it's journalist mode. Nintendo does this with their NES/SNES releases on the Switch, letting people start off with tons of gear and extra stuff like a packaged in Game Genie code. And I think some other remasters/ports have done this in recent years. It's pretty dumb and doesn't really seem like original-creators intent.

Part of me rebels at this, but the other part appreciates it for folks that aren't good enough to scale that mountain yet, but may get hooked and improve in the future. I'm generally against dumbing down games if there's no difficulty slider, but don't sweat it if the option for the original experience is still there.

But I guess it's journalist mode. Low tier journalism if you ask me. Reporting on a game one played in a manner that is inconsistent with the true experience envisioned by the creators is... incorrect. That's just not an accurate representation of what the game's actually like. for folks that aren't good enough to scale that mountain yet, but may get hooked and improve in the future I doubt once they played through a game on easy, that kind of person would go back and replay it on normal or hard. In their mind they already "beat" the game, so they move on.

I'll just leave it at that. I'm aware I'm an insufferable elitist when it comes to railing against easy modes in games. To end on a positive note; Overcoming adversity strengthens self-reliance.

Thankfully we've pretty much always been in agreement on that around here. The old school gaming must have hardened us.
I think I just like to say that all games aren't going to be for everyone and difficulty could be one of the many factors as to why.

Heh, we've definitely had this discussion before. I just see this, to some degree, as a gateway drug for potential newbies. It's either that, or you see someone quit it three hours in. The folks that are going to persevere are... well, the folks that are already inclined to do so, like the folks here on this board. And like I said, part of me wants to trot out the "GIT GUD, SCRUB" statement... but I've also been gaming for 30 years of my life.

I think I just like to say that all games aren't going to be for everyone and difficulty could be one of the many factors as to why. There should be catered games for catered tastes. If those tastes encompass uncompromising difficulty, fair enough. part of me wants to trot out the "GIT GUD, SCRUB" statement... but I've also been gaming for 30 years of my life Well when we died five times in SMB, a white tanooki suit didn't come floating down from the sky. We didn't have a choice but to "git gud". Once someone learns to appreciate challenge for its own sake, there's no going back.
