Pretty sure that DBZ RPG is translated now, but I can't deal with that slow card battle thing and the high encounter rate. Yeah, I've never bothered to go back to it.

I have to imagine you guys know at least some Japanese, or is it just brute force trial and error? Sure you can skip text, but then you should probably know what you're doing in battles, what needs to be equiipped, items or spells, and all that probably has unique names or spellings so uncommon words. No idea though haha. I studied Japanese, mostly independently, for a few years. I used to work at a school with a robust Japanese foreign language program and exchange students from... somewhere in Hokkaido if I recall correctly. I'm not very good at it though, and I really can't "speak" the language competently at all. As far as gaming goes, I use a Japanese-English dictionary frequently + Google translate for the oddball kanji.

I have to imagine you guys know at least some Japanese I do not know Japanese. I have strongly considered learning it a few times. I have not done so yet. Largely because I'm already obsessive compulsive enough about gaming, learning Japanese would quadruple the amount of games available to me. I'm not sure what little is left of my sanity could handle that alternate reality.

I very briefly took an online course, but when I started looking into it everybody seemed to be saying that it would take at least 3 years of living in Japan and studying it intensely to get anywhere near proficient, and that completely discouraged me.

I remember anayo saying he knows (some?) Japanese. Though I have no idea how proficient he is at it. Maybe if he starts hanging around the forum more again he can let us know.

I can read better than I can listen. I'm also better when there's lots of kanji. Like if it's just hiragana I get lost pretty easily.

In my teens and early twenties, I studied kanji and reading a lot, but not speaking or listening practice. So I became overly reliant on the visual shapes of kanji rather than the sounds they make.

I got a D in Spanish during middle school. At parent teacher conferences the grumpy old lady teacher told my parents "This is not for him".
Somehow did okay in French class, but I only remember eating donuts and pastries.
Dropped Japanese in college before I got a W/F.
To say I SUCK at learning other languages is an understatement. Just not wired for it. Maybe I could do better on my own, but me and self teaching at home has never worked out.

Most public schools start teaching foreign languages way too late. At the school I used to work at Japanese instruction began in kindergarten. Speaking of which, look at their website right now, haha. www.kidsrsu.org/o/hdes
