I wanted to learn Japanese. Still do. But then I realize my motivation for it is to play more video games, when I can't even come close to finishing the English games that I have, so I figure I should devote my energy elsewhere.

At the school I used to work at Japanese instruction began in kindergarten. Why in the world would a Maine elementary school be so invested in teaching the Japanese language?

I played with the idea of learning Japanese myself but I never committed to it, mostly because 1) It's a huge time investment, 2) Much like Ex mentioned, it would make a ridiculous amount of untranslated games now readily accessible - which is good but also very bad, 3) There are a few languages I know but I need to constantly consume some sort of media in those languages or I'll lose touch and that eats away at my time already. Cool thread anyway, there are a few untranslated games I'm interested in myself: Brandish 3 and 4 come to mind, although I'm not sure how text-heavy those games really are. I'd actually prefer it if there wasn't much text at all, then I might actually be able to play them. Then there's Volfoss - or the weirdest SRPG ever made. It's fully 3D and it seems to be worth a look for its monster design alone: Speaking of SRPGs, there's also Soldnerschild for the Saturn. It was later released for the PS1, too: Then there's the Quo Vadis series: turn-based strategy games (SRPGs?) where you command spaceships: And finally the Black/Matrix series from the creators of Summon Night, seems to be much darker in tone than the latter and more akin to the SMT series:

@tsumuri and Sarge: I would only recommend learning Japanese if you just love languages. Video games can be an ulterior motivation, but the love of words themselves is a must. The time investment is just insane, especially for Japanese. I've been studying on and off since age 16 and I don't think I'll be really decent at it until I'm in my mid-30's. I could probably speed that up considerably if I had a circle of Japanese friends but that hasn't happened so far. toei: I agree, I think foreign language talent is a genetic or God-given thing. Just based on my observations throughout life I think there's a bell curve where most "average" people can learn a language. They sound hella foreign when they speak it and they're generally "thinking" in their native tongue and just cutting and pasting foreign vocabulary over their thoughts. I guess it's like hardware vs. software rendering. Then there's a 10% category of people who can't or will eternally suck at it. Then there's this other 10% outlier of these weird savant-like people who can pass for a native over the phone.

Brandish 3 and 4 come to mind I've considered trying to play through those myself, despite them remaining firmly in Japanese. I've spent a little time looking for decent English walkthroughs, but haven't found much yet. The PS1 really does have troves of untranslated JRPGs/SRPGs. It's a bit of a travesty. Oh well, here's hoping well working auto-translation glasses someday come to pass.

Just happened upon this 2D PSX ARPG today. I find the visuals quite charming, and it seems to take after Crusader of Centy gameplay-wise (which has particularities of its own, despite being usually referred to as a "Zelda clone".)
Community Pom:
Speaking of Crusader of Centy, the same team went on to make this untranslated Saturn ARPG, which also looks cool:

I'm keeping an eye on some of these for later haha.
I know a little bit of Japanese, but probably not enough to get very far in most games (and especially not most RPGs). I do enjoy studying it, but definitely not while studying for college courses. The little bit I do know is nice for picking out a few Japanese voice lines here and there though ha.

I mentioned Linkle Liver Story in my first post (for some reason the forum ate the image I posted). Fantastic, fun, lighthearted game. Highly recommended.
Community Pom looks really cool. Fill-in-Cafe was a quality developer.
