More video of AetherSX2 Alpha, the quickly advancing PS2 emulator for Android:
Heh, looks like we won't need a Steam Deck for portable PS2 after all.

This video about all the weird quirks of the Nintendo Switch version of Zelda: Ocarina of Time fascinated me from start to finish.

Someone did a dive into why the water stuff turned out wrong. There's some blending and other things that they've just gotten wrong in their emulation that they need to fix. Disappointing that they couldn't do better than they have in the past.

We expect companies to re-release games (whether emulated or remake/remastered) with a similiar level of care that they were originally given. Clearly, they treat it more like an out sourcing job and if it sucks then neither the parent company nor the series needs to have its reputation tarnished.

I'll just say that Nintendo of today is not the Nintendo of yesterday, and certainly not the Nintendo that created Ocarina of Time.

So what happened is they swapped from a different team that used to do tailor-made versions for each game on Virtual Console to an overarching emulator that handles all of it. I do think they used an internal team for it, but I'm guessing they only gave them a shoestring budget. Sad, really - they have the tools to do so much better.

I get a real "Oh fine, have it. We let the intern try to port it on the new stuff. Take it a shut up" vibe from them when it comes to their legacy archive. Seems like it's a headache to Nintendo to even look back and let fans enjoy their past work. It's been evident in recent years they'd love to go the Disney Vault route and lock that stuff up forever. The Mini's, the half baked 3D Mario collection that omits an entire game and got patches months later for some control issues, these are just premium novelty items to them. Definitely one of their most annoying attributes thesedays.
Emulators > Nintendo. They have themselves to blame if you ask me.

Well, I have to wonder if emulators are part of the reason that Nintendo doesn't put much resources into it. So many people can (and do) just download the stuff for free and play that way. And the sorts of folks (for the most part) that don't deal with that often don't pick up on the problems and inaccuracies that we do. It wouldn't at all surprise me if the numbers on Virtual Console were pretty bad overall. I know people that never even hooked their Wii in online.
