Sapphire itself is from the Lord of Thunder guys.

I remember when Sapphire was considered a holy grail amongst vintage shmup collectors. It and Judgement Silversword: Rebirth Edition (WonderSwan Color) were often brought up as nigh impossible to find must-haves. But this was all back around 2005 or so. Those titles may not hold the same level of desire these days, I don't know.

Those titles may not hold the same level of desire these days, I don't know. About 5 years ago Sapphire was pretty much still seen as the it-game for PCECD collectors. But it has long been tarnished now by a slew of fakes, actual pressed CDs and made to look real. Here's a link of it on DigitPress back in 2005:
So yeah, still hot, but now hot in all new ways.
Edit: Apparently, things are getting worse for Sapphire, too. Looks like the notorious forger Tobias is making hard-to-detect copies like he did with Rondo:

Sapphire itself is from the Lord of Thunder guys. Yep, and that's also something I wasn't aware of. The only reason I made a distinction about the band is that apparently they were a separate entity from the developer. @opwuaioc, Ex: Yeah, I've known about the prevalence of forgeries, and it's awful. Despicable truly is the right word.

Sarge I don't know if Gates of Thunder is on the mini TG-16 too, but if it is, that's also the same crew, and it's a really solid shooter. They also made Hagane (not sure, but I don't think you finished that one?) which is one of the better action platformers on the SNES, and not really as hard as people say it is. You just have to learn how to use your arsenal.

Unfortunately, Gate of Thunder isn't on there, and it, along with Legendary Axe, happens to be one of the games cited as missing when it should have been there. I know that it happens to be a lot of folks' favorite shmup. That has a good soundtrack, too, although I'm pretty sure it's a different composer/band for it.
Hagane is on my list for some day. I've always heard it's super tough, but there are games that get this reputation that don't deserve them, so I'm not surprised it's perhaps not so bad.

You just have to learn how to use your arsenal. I liked Gate of Thunder even better than Lords of Thunder. I think the latter is more well known since it was ported to the Sega CD. It might look better, but I wasn't a fan of the sword mechanic and the sounds from collecting the crystals are so annoying. The music is talked up, but you can't really hear it. And besides, Gate has a rockin soundtrack, too. Unfortunately, Gate of Thunder isn't on there, and it, along with Legendary Axe, happens to be one of the games cited as missing when it should have been there. Hagane is old school tough, but not cheap tough.

I think the main reason people say Hagane is so hard is because you have more moves than you normally do in a game of that era, and you get them right from the start, so you do have to take a moment to get familiar with them. Once you get going, though, it's tough-but-fair, which is the best kind of tough.
@opwuaioc Lords of Thunder is on my to-play list. I messed with it a little and I did like the sword mechanic, so I expect it to resonate with me.

My understanding is that the Sega CD version is easier. I've beaten that one. I haven't beaten the TG version. I also tend to prefer the remastered soundtrack in the Sega CD version, but I know folks that prefer the original.
