I think Deus Ex might have still been okay with a blank slate protagonist. It's not like JC has a lot of charisma or a brazen personality. I beg to differ. I find JC Denton a pretty memorable character, if anything because his complete lack of empathy makes for some unintentionally hilarious conversations. He was a good man. *lip smack* What a rotten way to die.I really liked the first Diablo game, but I believe I might like Nox even more. It's a pretty different game as there's much more interaction with NPCs and there's more of a story to it. Sacred is pretty cool as well, but I never finished it. I heard good things about Revenant and the Divinity games. I often see Torchlight mentioned as a good alternative to Diablo, but I despise that game - it's the textbook definition of generic fantasy and has the most uninteresting cartoony art style. Not an isometric game, but as you might already know, some Diablo developers went on to create Hellgate: London. It recently came out on Steam too, but apparently it has little to do with the original game as it underwent some dramatic changes over the years and was turned into a Korean MMO. By the way, do you know of any other first person, no party-based, retro CRPGs with real-time combat besides the Ultima Underworld, Arx Fatalis and the Elder Scrolls games?

They're not CRPGs, but I'm gonna throw King's Field out there again before Ex does.

@ex I like Eye of the Beholder both on SNES and Sega CD, though if you plan to play the whole trilogy you're better off going the GOG.com route as character data can be transferred to the sequels. Ah yes, Dungeon Master rules, as does Dungeon Master II. Once again, I like these a lot on SNES and Sega CD. I don't find computer-to-console conversions of these games as awkward as many folks do. In many cases I downright prefer the console versions. I'm really curious about Dungeon Master: Theron's Quest, which I understand to be a remixed version of the first game. It's on the TurboGrafx CD and is (wait for it) kinda expensive. In addition to The Bard's Tale II being on Famicom, Dragon Wars is as well. That one basically is a Bard's Tale game in all but name. Sarge The Runes of Virtue games are successful because they were developed for Game Boy & SNES hardware, and do a pretty good job of bringing Western ARPGs to those systems. On the other hand, Ultima got the most questionable console ports. III on NES is actually pretty fun, but quite different from the computer game. IV is completely different depending on SMS vs. NES -- with the former being loyal (or trying to be loyal) to the computer original while the latter is much more JRPG-ish. The ports of the fifth, sixth, and seventh games have just been hacked to pieces and are very very weak. Oh, and play The Bard's Tale for the Christian themes.

Oh, and play The Bard's Tale for the Christian themes. I also think that the whole "You must become the most virtuous avatar!" element of Ultima would appeal to Sarge. Although I don't remember which of the entries are about that. I know quite a few are. Sarge likes to be the good guy hero who saves the day. The opposite of me.

I always shoot for the super-duper light side moral endings if possible. Especially in BioWare stuff. I can't talk about the game, but I agonized over a decision in-game that would have gotten my character a significant class bonus, but would have involved doing something pretty reprehensible. I didn't do it, despite being a game. Of course, there are games that don't give you a choice, so... well, you just kinda roll with the punches. You can never not have Kratos from God of War not be horrible, nor can you avoid feeding on people in something like Legacy of Kain: Defiance.

Yeah I've stumbled upon the Divinity games before, they definitely look cool. Another relevant game to check out, that no one ever talks about, is Heretic Kingdoms: The Inquistion: www.gog.com/game/heretic_kingdoms_the_inquisitionI've read good reviews of this game. Here's the corniest worst trailer ever:

Yeah that trailer is tedious garbage (why wait almost a minute to show game footage if you only have two lines of introduction to say?), but I can see how it might be a decent game.

I hate it when trailers spend so much time on intro and not on gameplay. Show me the game, people!
Doesn't look bad, though.

What I own on GOG that I haven't touched: Ultimate 4: Quest of the Avatar Syndicate Plus (not sure if this counts) Realms of Arkania 3 Gorky 17 Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator (a more literal attempt at PC going for an FF7 haha, always packed in with SHOGO back in the day) Nox Icewind Dale Complete Icewind Dale 2 Complete Enclave Temple of Elemental Evil, The Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard Two Worlds Epic Edition Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
I don't even know how I got all these, that's the story of GOG for me. Any of these stand out for you guys? I always see Arcanum get name dropped.
