I'd take Ninja Gaiden Xbox over the NES trilogy.
Wouldn't give a dime for this Modern trilogy collection though. Sounds like they're greatly lacking optimization options and NG1-2 are the Sony Sigma versions which were worse than the originals. Team Ninja "lost the source code" to the Xbox/360 versions apparently as is always the case...

The NES trilogy should be unlocked after beating the modern trilogy on hard.

Well, I remember the original release of Ninja Gaiden on XBOX had the NES games as unlockables. That would be the ideal scenario here. For my money, I like both the NES games and (most of) the modern ones, but if I were forced to have one not exist, it'd be the modern games. Sorry, Xeogred . The nostalgia is too strong.

If I'm off my Streets of Rage 2-3 nostalgia train too, I'd say the character action genre is a superior advancement over sidescrolling beat em' ups. From Ninja Gaiden Xbox to DMC's to Nier to From Software's titles being somewhat adjacent, and most of this genre generally having highly challenging entry barriers, it just might be my favorite modern genre of them all on certain days. The depth of a fighting game yet in a single player adventure format.

I'd say the character action genre is a superior advancement over sidescrolling beat em' ups. I agree. It seems that traditional 2D belt-scrolling beat 'em ups are popular around HRG. Personally that genre gets boring for me very quickly, usually gets boring before I even finish the game.* That is not to say I don't enjoy a beat 'em up from time to time, but they can become stale quickly for me. Character action games I've played tend to offer more variety, and greater challenge, which aids in maintaining interest in the gameplay long term. *Unless I'm playing it co-op with somebody, that doubles the fun easily.

I'm mad that the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy for Nintendo Switch is the XBOX era Ninja Gaidens and not the NES ones. Why? There are already many options to play those. They're more readily available to play than the XBOX games. Though as Xeo pointed out, apparently the collection doesn't really do them justice. Also, the NES games are hardcore burning bags of rotten trash, but that's a different topic. The character action genre is the one modern genre I want to get into eventually, if I start playing games more regularly again. I'm almost sure I'd like it.

You like your games weird and obtuse toei and that sums up Nier. I wish we got more mature JRPG styled stories like them more often than not. For the record... I own the crappy SNES Ninja Gaiden trilogy in a fairly pristine cartridge and those eBay prices, hot damn. Maybe this is one I should ditch for some money since I don't care about these versions at all. My Mega Man X3 isn't going anywhere though.

Yeah, the SNES version is sub-optimal to say the least. Cool that you have that version, though!

To clarify I think you're talking about the Ninja Gaiden trilogy haha.
DKC3 GBA vs SNES... kind of half and half so far. The weirdest thing is how the momentum/physics seem slightly changed, so it's throwing me off at times. The new music is making this replay pretty cool though.
