Glad they found them. Still such a shame that we've lost him.

anayo Chema EasyHard Sarge XeogredQuestion for you gentlemen. When you play these old DOS FPS games like Blood, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Heretic and so on, do you use a keyboard, keyboard + mouse, just mouse, or a control pad?

It very much depends on the game. For DOOM and Dark Forces, I preferred using a gamepad. For a game like Descent, mouse and keyboard. I'd probably want gamepad for DN3D, but I can also see the argument for mouse/keyboard, since I believe that you can enable mouse look options.

Keyboard + Mouse and modern control layouts. Definitely been spoiled on WASD. I generally use GZDoom for Doom and wads. I consider jumping cheating, since that's not in the original and can be disabled.
For Doom, Heretic, that engine, and anything else in the pseudo 2D/3D style, I turn off vertical look completely. Playing Doom with full mouselook feels like heresy to me. I don't even like doing it much in Build Engine games but they kind of need it. It's cool that some source ports and modern DN3D releases have new rendering methods that make vertical look appear more natural. The geometry/textures won't get as warped like they used to. For anything 3D though like Quake then yeah, normal controls basically.
First time I played Doom back in the day was at a friend's with one of these...
Similarly I played Half-Life 1 at a friend's with a flight stick...
I'm glad the dark days of bad clunky peripherals is behind us.
There's still some stuff I like with controllers more, like the Halo series. I think it can be more comfortable overall too but I'll definitely favor K/M for FPS's thesedays, especially for immersive sim Deus Ex / modern Fallout styled stuff. It seriously feels like I'm probably saving a few hours worth in total by being able to loot and manage menu's 10x faster on K/M in these kind of games.
A very weird thing about me, I play inverted on controllers, but normal on PC with a mouse. I don't have a clue why but that's what feels best to me.

Ex In the 90's I played all PC FPSes only on keyboard. In modern times I still play Doom only on a keyboard, but for everything else (Build engine games, Quake, etc.) I also use a mouse to look around. Doing this permanently ruined my view of the Duke 3D and Quake ports for the Sega Saturn. Graphically speaking those Saturn versions are competent, but the controls suck so bad that it makes them way harder to play than they are on PC. I'm a weirdo who wants Build Engine games to warp.

Thanks for the input guys. I've heard of GZDoom but I didn't know it had those features, such as enabling mouse look or disabling texture warping. Back in the '90s I used keyboard only for Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, and Dark Forces for example. Once Quake released with its paradigm shifting mouse look, that all changed for me (and the PC FPS industry at large). But going back to pre-Quake FPS games lately, such as Heretic, left me wondering if they'd play better using mouse or joystick input. Heretic supports full mouse control, but it's a weird method of doing so. Realms of the Haunting also supports full mouse control, but again, it's a strange setup. Until the "WASD + mouse look" template took hold, PC FPS control was a wild west. So I was thinking of using a gamepad for these older FPS entries. Didn't realize that GZDoom allowed complete control remapping into modern formats and such. But GZDoom only supports certain games. I don't think it'd help me with CyberMage for instance.

So you were playing Heretic with keyboard only up till now? Heh. I must have used GZDoom when I played Heretic, since I just remember playing it at 1080p with modern controls like I do with Doom. I think I've messed with GZDoom's controller options before and they're pretty good. For Build Engine games, I've used BuildGDX in recent years for when I played Blood and I'll use it for when I play Power Slave and others: m210.duke4.net/I used Dark Places for Quake: icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/ (I'm pretty curious how the new release of Quake is though) I'd say for anything pre-Half-Life 1 I'll generally look for source ports that run better on modern systems and such.

All the times I've played Heretic it was via keyboard only. This is out of historical habit. When I played these older FPS back in the '90s, GZDoom didn't exist. I'm thinking Heretic could work well with just a gamepad though. It seems like the Doom engine FPS games allow the player to have hitscanning of their own, so you don't necessarily have to "look up" to shoot an enemy above you.
