Yup, that's why I keep vertical look off. Don't want to see the environment looking weird either haha.

I would definitely try a gamepad and see how it works for you. As you say, since you don't have to look up/down to hit enemies, I found the gamepad to work very well for older FPSs like that.

I agree, for oldschool simpler FPS, gamepad seems ideal these days.
Unfortunately Realms of the Haunting requires using the mouse period. You can use the keyboard for movement (or the mouse), but aiming is contextual and requires manipulating the firing cursor directly over the enemy*. Also the myriad world objects require mouse interaction as well.
*Although this has been an advantage at times. Like you can peek through a door at an angle, and shoot an enemy on the far side of the room, even if they have a crate partially blocking their sprite. That sort of thing.

Yeah, I've played a bit of Realms of the Haunting. It's got a very odd control scheme for sure.

Finally got around to installing CoinOpsX on the AtGames hockey puck. Didn't want to download the ginormous package out there, so I just got the files needed to run TMNT and Turtles in Time. Yep, they're definitely TMNT. Worked quite well. There are console add-on packs as well, so if you want to go nuts and just install a ton of stuff, you can. I don't know that I'll use it too much, but at least it's an option. I would hook it up to the TV in the living room, but that set is only 720p and the unit only outputs 1080p. I ended up getting a 128GB flash drive for this unit, and I got a 256GB flash drive to replace the one on the Wii, freeing up a 256GB MicroSD that will be repurposed for something else.

Has anyone here ever played Einhander, Square's PSX shoot-'em-up? I'm in the mood for more PSX Square. I really should give FFVIII another shot (I beat VII and IX, but never VIII) when I have the time for a longer game.

For polygonal PSX shmups I think I liked it more than Thunder Force V.

I've played it, but haven't stuck with it. Seems like quality, though, and I know it's quite well-regarded.

Well, now I have CoinOpsX fully on the puck. It's... fine. It looks great, and the preview videos are really nice, but the UI is pretty slow overall. You can use the less flashy AddOnX browser instead, and I think if I wanted to save space I could get rid of the CoinOpsX folder if I just want to run the UCE files and make more room for other stuff. It's apparently a pretty decent little chip - someone said it's roughly on the level of a Pi 4. Honestly, though, I'll probably goof around with it for a bit and throw it in the closet again... it just doesn't have anything on MiSTer for the stuff that supports.
EDIT: Oh, one more annoyance with this piece of kit - you only have five offline sessions with AddOnX before you're forced to log into their servers again. It's fine if you've got it set up with wireless, but not ideal if you just want it to be a standalone piece of kit. I get why they did this (don't want folks to only use pirated ROMs), but it's still a little obnoxious.
