Some interest, yes (for those who don't know, it's a crossover between the two series I mentioned). I think the last time I considered it I didn't want to emulate any DS game that made use of its bottom screen a lot cause I don't like how it looks on my laptop screen... but I can see myself trying it soon-ish. I actually gave the first Professor Layton a shot recently. I just didn't feel like solving hundreds of annoying "trick" puzzles (it's more of a puzzle game than an adventure game) like those, but it was well made.

I just didn't feel like solving hundreds of annoying "trick" puzzles (it's more of a puzzle game than an adventure game) like those, but it was well made. That's a fair way of describing The Curious Village, though I didn't find the "trick" puzzles annoying generally. I have beaten that one before, along with the next two games in the series.* The Layton games are very much just a collection of (LOTS) of mini-puzzles strung out across a story, as opposed to what would constitute a traditional adventure game with legitimately integrated puzzles to progress. In my experience the Layton games are overrated (but still decent) by casuals who lacked experience playing better adventure games before. Granted this is coming from someone who grew up on the Sierra On-Line and LucasArts games back in the late '80s and early '90s. *I gave Curious Village a 7/10, Diabolical Box a 5/10, and Unwound Future a 7/10. I've read from Last Specter onward the series steps it up notches. Will find out eventually when the rare mood strikes for this sort of game.

Great googly moogly at the sprites and colors. Impressive stuff. If I remember right, this requires very careful timing to pull off correctly, and basically chews up almost all the CPU, so it would have been great for cutscene/attract demos for games.
I liked Curious Village myself, but I agree, it's really just a collection of logic puzzles wrapped up in an adventure game shell. But it's definitely got style and polish, so it gets extra points for that. I think 7/10 is fair, maybe an 8/10 if I'm feeling charitable (been a while since I played through). It's great for what it is.

basically chews up almost all the CPU That video ended just before the Genesis exploded. There are a lot of Layton games, but it's been a while since we've seen a sequel starring the Professor himself. Some more recent sequels starred relatives of the Hershel, though... his brother and daughter. But in 2025 we're finally getting a proper sequel starring Hershel again. When that releases, it will have been 12 years since the last Layton game actually starring the professor himself as the protagonist.

The concept of P3 always sounded cooler to me. The "darker" one supposedly. But when the remaster dropped a few months ago and I caught some streams, I saw enough to lose interest again. Also 90% of the time I tune into someone playing a Persona game it's nonstop dialogue and talking, which I guess is fine to set it apart from SMT being more hardcore dungeon crawling... but yeah.
P4 still sounds like the fan favorite from what I gather. I guess P5 just improves upon the dungeon designs or something, but who knows. I still have no interest in these at all myself. I don't like when people make fun of Xenoblade's looks or even something like Toriyama's art style, but yeah... I'm that guy when it comes to Persona. Just looks appalling to me. lol

Wow, it's been that long? Geez. Time flies, doesn't it?

I'm that guy when it comes to Persona. Just looks appalling to me. I don't mind the art style for the modern Persona games, but I don't care for their OSTs in general. Too many songs with actual sung lyrics. I only want instrumental music in my games. Especially when the battle theme includes lyrics, and you have to hear those same lyrics literally hundreds if not a thousand times before the game's over. Wow, it's been that long? Geez. Time flies, doesn't it? The last Layton game that actually starred the professor himself was Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy that released for 3DS in 2013. The most recent Layton related game was 2017's Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy, but it stars Hershel's daughter not him.

Hmm, the Detective Conan & Kindaichi Case Files crossover game is 30 hours long. That's another reason I had decided to ignore it, most likely. I don't think I have the time, and probably not the patience either, for such a long full-on adventure game.
There are two fan-translated Detective Conan games on the GBC, too. Those are much shorter - they appear to be around 3 hours long each - and one plus is that you get to walk around in top-down view to explore the scenes and talk to people, which I find more involving than just dialogues and menus.

You could watch the anime instead? Only 1,135 episodes and counting!

I wonder if it's one story per episode, which is usually how the drama version is, or if they have long story arcs. Because if it's the first, that little guy must be solving most of the murders in Japan.
