I like to try to emulate games on any device I can. Whether I actually play them is another thing entirely, but at least it means I've hacked whatever it was properly. For instance, I threw some emulators on my Fire Stick, and tested Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star IV. I get your concerns, chibby. Learning a lot of the ins and outs of emulation can be a bit overwhelming at first. As Ex says, though, once you've got it down, that knowledge will carry forward. And just so you know, I don't view any downloaded ROMs as my "backlog", unless there is a specific game in that collection that I'm actually interested in playing. Grabbing a large ROM set, though, is great in that you don't have to go scrounging for, say, a game you read about that looks awesome on HG101, or that someone talked about here. Plus, how else are you going to experience Little Samson? So... much... money...

I don't like doing much with phones in general. They're for texting, FB (yeah yeah, I logged off on my PC months ago at least and that was very freeing in some ways), Twitter, podcasts, and maps. I've played a lot of Bubble Bobble/Bust-a-Move clones but that's about it. I don't like touching my phone when I'm home and I also have never really cared for handheld gaming on the go, with neck problems and my history of handhelds being a banned element of my entire childhood which I've explained before. Love my 3DS though, but I just play stuff at my desk like usual. Gaming is a solitary experience when I'm not hanging out with friends, so I just like to be in my own office and element playing games for any device. I'd rather just browse stuff on my breaks at work or even school years ago, since you can't set a lot of time aside to really get into a game. It's like I really have to switch modes. It's crazy to remember how good I got with keyboard controls for ZSNES back in the day... to the point that I could speedrun Super Metroid very well. Heck, to this day I think I could pull off some morph ball tricks better on a keyboard because your directional inputs are more deliberate. But yeah fast forward 10 plus years with the rise of perfect replica USB controllers nowadays (SNES Buffalo gamepad is amazing), it's leveled up my interest in emulation again these past several years. I love being able to take screenshots too. And well, all my saves remain on my computer for years! It'll continue to get increasingly harder to take care of the old hardware. :\ I've told you guys I want to make this a good year for the Genesis, I'm hoping this badboy is as good as it looks. I had a Hyperkin variant but it really sucked. Now that I've used the Buffalo gamepad so much for Nintendo stuff, I'm starting to get picky about what gamepads I use for per emulation/system, haha. But it really does enhance the experience and make it even better, personally.

handheld gaming on the go, with neck problems I picture you sitting down with your elbows on your knees, hunched over leaning your face down to play a handheld cradled in mid-air between your legs. If that were the case, I can see how neck pain might incur. (Not saying you necessarily do that.) For all the years I've played handhelds (since 1989), I've never actually played them "on the go". I've always played them at home, or at most in a hotel room. I also play them in a reclined fashion, with my head resting against something. I typically put two pillows on my lap to support the handheld on, so my arms don't have to float the handheld in the air. Very relaxing gaming, no neck pain. The portability factor is still important to me, because I play these things in my bed, on my porch, or the couch while someone else is watching TV. I don't have to be shackled to an entertainment center.

I can't get into games when I'm outside. I'm perfectly fine with games for handhelds as long as I play them when I'm at home. Imagine playing Fire Emblem on the GBA while you're on a train. I would either 1) miss my stop and realize it two hours later after I finally clear a level, 2) make no progress at all as I'm not fully focused on the game.

Yeah, that's tough for me, too. I've played for a bit in an airport, but I feel like it distracts me too much from what's going on around me. I'm willing to do so on a plane, but even that bothers me at times, because I sometimes feel like maybe I'm being judged by the person next to me. So most of the time, it's either a smartphone and reading articles, or playing games in a hotel room or at home.

sometimes feel like maybe I'm being judged by the person next to me Admittedly this is a thing for me too. I don't want to be that middle-aged man playing a 3DS on the plane. Which means I'm part of the problem in prolonging the social stigma. I do play games on my phone in public, but those tend to be digital gamebooks, so it just looks like I'm reading stuff. Ironically I've never seen a kid playing a 3DS or Vita in public. Kids are always playing on phones or tablets these days (where I live anyway).

Welp, glad I'm not the only one.
Now, that being said, I have seen kids playing 3DS in public, although as always, those are the "gamer" kids. The ones that don't care as much and are willing to put up with time-wasters will generally be on tablets, watching videos or playing some cheap mobile game. Apologies to the kids with good taste.
My parents wouldn't let me take the Game Boy on road trips anyway, so... yeah. I had to learn to interact with folks, instead of having my head buried in a game system. Of course, that meant sometimes I had it buried in a book, but that was much more acceptable. We'd still get the "look out the windows" admonition, though!

If that were the case, I can see how neck pain might incur. (Not saying you necessarily do that.) I wish. It's more like a double impact car wreck from about 10-12 years ago, unfortunately going down into the hack practice that is chiropractic treatment for years off and on fucking things up even more (you will never ever catch me recommending this to anyone, it's a BS field), working pharmacy jobs for about four years where I'm standing on my feet for 10 hour days at times looking down on a table counting pills or working with prescription paperwork... it has all added up and I have serious issues that plaque me daily. I have tried just about everything and seen so many joker doctors over the years. Finally going to try and see a neurologist this year though. DDP Yoga was the best thing I ever did over the years to regain some motion and improve things and all that required was a damn mat and DVD's... and being years removed from pharmacy jobs have helped a little. But it feels like a lot of my life was robbed from my 20's.
Not yelling at you though, but yeah this certainly doesn't make handheld gaming very ideal for me. lol, the large screen of the 3DS and the controller grip along with playing at my desk makes it work though.

My 28 year old bearded self was playing Gameboy Color with a snake light on my last flight. I don't give a F.
