Our theme for February's Club Retro is "Fan Translations". Meaning games that were originally published in a particular language, that have since been unofficially translated into a different language. This will likely be Club Retro's most broad theme ever, as the gamut of genres and platforms that fall under this distinction is incredibly wide open.
Romhacking.net currently claims 1107 complete English fan translations: linkBut there are other sites that host translations which do not appear on RHDN.
This should be a fun and easy month to participate in, I hope everyone does! If you need help with this stuff just let us know.

Personally speaking, my initial inclination with this theme is to gravitate towards the ocean of JRPGs. However, I'm currently in the middle of a Vita JRPG, thus juggling another JRPG on top of that is a bad idea. So for now I'm going to focus on shorter action based fan translated games, of which there is no shortage of thankfully.

I'm going to hit up a few fan translated SRPGs later this month after I'm done with FE. I'm probably going to play fan translated games here and there during the entire year, but I'll try to play a bunch in February. I'll prioritize games whose translation was actually put into the game, rather than merely floating around the internet. Which is a shame, by the way. A game with a fan translation but no translation patch is almost worse than a game with no fan translation at all. Bahamut Lagoon is definitely among the games I have in mind. Hopefully I won't hate it. Also Majin Tensei, but apparently the translation is spotty and incomplete. Too bad, since the sequel was actually fully translated.

Action games are actually a great idea. But there's no limit on stuff to play. I feel like some of us (okay, maybe just me) tend to see the latest translated release, try it out for a bit, then forget about it. This gives an excuse to pick up and play a game you might not have stuck with!
I'm torn between finishing a few I have started (Marvelous!, Mystic Ark, La Wares), or trying something different. For example, there's The Violinist of Hamelin, Do-Re-Mi Fantasy, and Hyper Iria right there for the taking for action games I haven't given a lot of time to.

I did want to take a look at Marvelous last year. But I think Treasure of the Rudras will be my agenda, been having an SNES itch again for awhile. But it might not be until later in the month since I'm busy with other stuff lately.
You all know my love for Seiken Densetsu 3... and now Gun Hazard...
But for now I'll recommend something shorter and a little more under the radar, Alcahest. It's a very weird arcadey ARPG that's only a few hours long, but pretty dang fun. Straight up one of my top favorite SNES OST's too. I think most here have already played it though?

If you want to experience something RPG-ish that won't take up too much time or play too much like your Vita RPG, I recommend Holy Umbrella. Top-down RPG towns, side-scrolling platformer levels. Breezy, fun, and only a few hours long. Xeogred'd recommendation of Alcahest is also good, though I don't remember if you've played it or not. It's the most arcade console ARPG there is, and is also very short. Neugier is pretty decent and only about 3-4 hours long, too.

The Violinist of Hamelin, Do-Re-Mi Fantasy, and Hyper Iria right there for the taking for action games I haven't given a lot of time to. Violinist is a good idea, I might hit that one up. I can confirm after beating it, that Hyper Iria is super stuff. I did want to take a look at Marvelous last year. I've beaten Marvelous, it's worth everyone's time. Very unique, very entertaining action-adventure. I've beaten this one too. It's a mostly solid action-RPG, although much more action than RPG. I recommend Holy Umbrella. / Neugier is pretty decent and only about 3-4 hours long, too. I am definitely going to give Holy Umbrella a go.
As for Neugier, I played through about half of it a few years ago, and wasn't impressed at all. I don't get what folks like about it.

If anybody is looking for recommendations for any particular system, just say so!

Neugier is highly average. And it's Wolf Team, so it gets a small bump from a slight amount of notoriety.

That's a fair point.

Well I've put together a folder of about 50 fan translated ROMs today. Definitely not hurting for variety of choice for this theme. I even bothered to buy a better smartphone controller in anticipation, as that's where I like to emulate these days. Looking forward to seeing what you folks choose to play.

I mean, Neugier is average, but an average mid-90s console action RPG is good enough for me. It's a lot better than, say, Gulliver Boy on the SNES.
