Are there any unreleased game that you particularly care about, wish had been released, or hope to see a prototype get dumped for one day? Off the top, I'm curious how the 64DD Mother 3 might have turned out. I honestly prefer the GBA's 2D over the screenshots we've seen, but it sounds like it was going to be an almost completely different game. Had it been released and successful, could that have led to more Mother games? But at least we ended up getting a Mother 3, and an excellent one. The unreleased game I'm most interested in lately is Dando, aka Vasum. It was a side-scroller RPG with a top-down overworld developed by Aicom for the Genesis around 1990/1991. The character sprite is reminiscent of Legendary Axe's (he walks in the same position), and in fact, one of the previews called it "Part RPG and part Legendary Axe-style action", suggesting it might have played similarly. The UI doesn't show any gauge, though, so it seems unlikely that it would have used the same weapon system. Development seems to have been very advanced, perhaps even finished, as one of the previews stated the game had been in development for about a year and was "now ready". One of the magazine previews also featured a screenshot showing a shopkeeper's dialogue in English, suggesting the translation was also underway. I'd be amazing if a prototype ROM turned up, especially if it's fully-playable and in English! It sounds like it could have been great.

Man, the 64DD always makes me think of Zelda Gaiden. Which I think kind of evolved into the Master Quest and Majora's Mask in ways, but I have no clue. This picture from magazines is unforgettable:
Frankly though, even the early incarnations of Zelda OoT looked worlds different than what we got. Definitely something you don't see anymore nowadays for the most part, back then we only had magazine screenshots to go off of and it was always perplexing when a bunch of screenshots you saw, you don't end up seeing in the final game at all. As a child and with the baby internet that didn't have much back then, all you could do was wonder what happened and where did all that mysterious stuff go. How does one find the Triforce or Gold Tunic in OoT?...
I know OoT doesn't really count since well, we got it! But what a crazy development cycle. Final product looks like a completely different game. I remember it being delayed a lot too I believe, I've been patient for the main Zelda's ever since and know to give them time haha.
Also, I don't know if Metroid Dread was ever officially announced (think the title was teased in Metroid Prime 3's scanning logs somewhere), but these sure are some really intricately detailed maps that I want to play a Metroid game of...

Are there any unreleased game that you particularly care about, wish had been released, or hope to see a prototype get dumped for one day? First thing that came to mind for me was StarCraft Ghost, first announced in 2002. It was quite long into development when it was cancelled: starcraft.fandom.com/wiki/StarCraft:_Ghost

Dando is also strongly reminding me of Cadash. That would have been really cool!

Dando is also strongly reminding me of Cadash. That would have been really cool! Well, the Genesis version of Cadash was done by Cyclone Systems, which was started by ex-Aicom staff, and it came out about a year after this was supposed to, so there's probably something there. The NPCs and towns on those screenshots do give me a Cadash vibe.

I need to dig around back home and see if we maybe still have that old Sears catalog that had a screenshot of Black Tiger for NES. I don't remember if it was a shot of the arcade game, or if it was actually from a partially-completed NES version. Not sure, this might have been the screenshot.

This is a port, but the Famicom Disk System version of Square's Aliens: Alien 2. There is a prototype, but I don't think it's exactly a full game. It's possible to get a repro disk of the game now, which is rad. I may do that eventually. Any AtariAge fans? They've resurrected bunches of cancelled games. I recently picked up a copy of Alligator People -- slated to be released by 20th Century Fox in 1983, actually released by AtariAge in 2003. One interesting thing about that site: they actually "make" your games to order, so expect a wait of several weeks if you purchase something.

the Famicom Disk System version of Square's Aliens: Alien 2Interesting. Although I can say with confidence we didn't miss much there. Having not been a big fan of 2nd gen for a long time, I never messed with AtariAge much. I know what the place is, and I know a lot of Atari developers hang out there. Lots of highly knowledgeable folks for sure. I checked out some of the games for sale before, and the prices seemed a little high for homebrew repros (I was after Adventure II). BUT these are custom made to order carts and such, so fair enough.

That's right, I would've loved to play StarCraft: Ghost. That reminds of me of Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans, a point-'n-click adventure game that got cancelled in 1998, but a nearly-finished version surfaced on the internet in 2016 and seems to be an OK game at best.
Not particularly shocking picks, but I'd also mention Episode 3 and 4 for Half-Life 2. Also Prey 2 is one I would've liked to play. It was going to be an open world game. Didn't seem to share much with the original Prey, but then again, the recent remake/reboot doesn't either.
Fire Emblem 64 would've been cool too, but both Kaga leaving and the N64 not doing so well meant this one never saw the light of day.
I'm sure there are more I can't remember, I'll add them later.

Wing Commander 2 on SNES: Unless someone finds a prototype out there I'll always be left wondering how it played since it was apparently a completely different engine than what they used for the port of the first game.
