Brain Lord seems awesome. I gave it a go a few years ago, but got stuck somewhere, due to my colorblindness Aw man, that sucks. It must be aggravating being colorblind for many reasons; not the least of which being many developers never consider that aspect at all. In that regard a strategy guide is certainly understandable. The only other SNES JRPG I can recall having comparable Brain Lord level puzzle difficulty would be Lufia II. I agree that Produce were excellent developers in the fourth generation. Things kinda got weird for them after that though. Although I do hope we someday see an English fan translation for Mystic Ark: Maboroshi Gekijo on PS1. This reminded me that Aldynes exists. Given toei 's recent interest in shmups, and his love of the PCE/TG16, he may wanna check that one out.

Funny you should say that, Ex, cause when I read bone's post maybe 30 minutes ago I thought "I wonder what else Produce has done aside from 7th Saga, Mystic Ark and Brain Lord", looked them up, and noticed Aldynes. The setting and visual style seem very typical, but the fact that it's a Supergrafx game is intriguing enough for me to want to try it out.

toeiI've never beaten Aldynes, but it's got a good OST, as Produce games tend to have:

Rest assured, Mystic Ark: Maboroshi Gekijo isn't some hidden gem of an RPG. It's a slow meandering adventure game. As least from what I've played, which wasn't much. Someday I'll get a physical copy and try to give it another go.

I think I read somewhere that it starts out as an adventure game, then goes full RPG after a while. Can't remember where, though, so I could be wrong.

Maybe so. I probably didn't stick with it long enough. Just some emulator derping to hold me over until I get an actual copy.

PS2:Xenosaga III Final Fantasy X (admittedly liked it more a second time around years later with the PS3 remaster) Shadow Hearts Suikoden III
Such a little list! I've found more love on the PS2 thanks to HRG recs...
I think a better updated list would look something like this:
- Xenosaga III / Trilogy
- Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - Final Fantasy XII - Front Mission 4
- Final Fantasy X - Shadow Hearts - Shadow Hearts: Covenant - Suikoden V - Suikoden III
I'm very optmistic about these ranking high, maybe even knocking some stuff down...
- Dragon Quest VIII - Front Mission 5 - SMT Digital Devil Saga 1-2
Others I own to hit up someday: - Arc the Lad Twilight of the Spirits - Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter - Growlanswer Generations - Rogue Galaxy - Valkyrie Profile 2 - Wild Arms 3 - Wild Arms 4
At this point, I finally feel happy with where I'm at and PS2 JRPG's. I was prejudice against the system and this genre for a long while. Terrible voice acting (Star Ocean 3?), the loss of pre-rendered backdrops from the PSX days that I loved, musical styles maybe not hitting me as hard as they did in previous gens, etc, it kind of seemed like I had a falling out with one of my favorite genres from the 16/32bit days. The changes weren't ideal in ways, but I knew there were some gems to dig up and find. The PS2 library is monstrous. There's probably still more good RPG's I can discover even when I play everything else I have. So we're on good terms now.

There's no question the stretch from SNES/Genesis/PCE to PS2/GC was the best the genre has ever had. And yeah, the PS2 is overburdened with JRPGs that are at least very good, and quite a few great ones. It'll keep you busy for sure!

Xeogred of your unplayed list, I most strongly recommend these: Dragon Quest VIII Front Mission 5 SMT Digital Devil Saga 1-2 Arc the Lad Twilight of the Spirits (from all that toei and Sarge have praised it) I do not recommend Rogue Galaxy. It looks great, sounds great, but suffers from seriously shitty game design. I made it like 30 hours into the game and just couldn't stomach it anymore. This one was clearly overrated due to its stellar presentation. Valkyrie Profile 2 is also a gorgeous game, some of the very best graphics ever on PS2. But VP2 kicked my ass. It's a RTFM game and I didn't RTFM. I will next time! I also wholeheartedly recommend these:
