No credits in R-Type III, but this saved screenshot of mine is my little badge of proof that I beat this bullshit. Look, I get that back in the 90's designers wanted some games to be hard to defeat the rental business. But R-Type III is just outright torturous in its outrageous difficulty. This took me an hour and 20 minutes to get through the "tour" with what felt like hundreds of save states and there were numerous times where I almost wanted to throw in the towel. I dare anyone here to spend an hour with this game and use all the save states you want, if you want to test your sanity. The other main R-Type games I've played are certainly tough in design and memory based, but straight up feel like training wheels for this shit. Most bosses in this series, you can sometimes one shot with a fully powered up pod and charge shot to their weakpoint. Here, not really. Oh and ever seen a boss rush in a shmup? This one blob boss turns into I think FIVE classic bosses from previous games. And that's not even the final boss. The back half of this game has so much bullshit it's just mindboggling, there is no way in hell someone trying to play this game legitimately would spend less than 100 hours on this game or something, to memorize every single little damn thing that happens in every moment of a level. The last boss was longer than some of the damn levels. It went on forever. First off, just look at this level. Does this look FUN at all?
Remember, YOU DIE IN ONE HIT IN R-TYPE. And the default speed and maxed out speed both suck.
Anyways, yeah that level was atrocious, but it's no big deal and merely training for this.
First off that's a cool gimmick in the beginning where the entire screen tries to crush you right? NO. Even if it was easy to figure out, this gimmick is freaking stupid.
14:55 - 15:52 is R-Type III thinking it's some kind of platformer or some crap. But the real fun starts there. Watch these lava blast things. They are always in a set pattern, but HOW WOULD YOU KNOW HOW TO GET THROUGH THIS ENTIRE SECTION without dying a billion times?
16:40 oh boy the boss, well thankfully it wasn't too hard...
17: 25 OH YEAH YOU GET TO BACKWARDS THROUGH THAT LAVA SHIT ALL OVER AGAIN, YEAAAAAAAAH FUCKING AMAZING
Don't even get me started on the final level. Some kind of inter dimensional warp shifting going on, where this little circle thing ends up being your saving grace to get through unbreakable walls at points. But the PIXEL MOMENT you get through you better move off from that circle because it also summons enemies that'll kill you if you're there. This level also had areas that mess up with your speed/controls, great!
Just WTF were they thinking with this game.

Xeogred Boss rushes were actually popularized by a shoot-'em-up (Fantasy Zone). You do see them sometimes. Coryoon, which I beat last month, had one, though it's not a one-hit kill game. Of course I'm sure I'd rage at R-Type III just as much as you. Rental business or not, SNES games were easier than NES games on average, so I would have expected R-Type III to follow suit, but it sounds like it went the opposite direction instead.

You're right about boss rushes, in fact almost every Gradius has a moment like that and I loved them! I was just fuming at how much harder and longer the boss battles are in R-Type III compared to the other installments... and then you get this one boss that morphs into five bosses. My post above there was right after finishing it, so hope you all enjoyed those fresh hot emotions. I feel bad for anyone that's spent the $100+ price R-Type III has commanded for years.
The only positives I have, are the graphics are amazing per usual with Irem, some solid music, and the slowdown didn't seem nearly as bad as Super R-Type.
Apparently this game gives you infinite continues anyways. But I cannot even fathom how dozens and numerous parts of the levels/bosses are even doable if you don't have a fully powered up pod and advanced weapons.
Now, I still might check out Metal Storm and maybe some other Irem stuff, but honestly I think I want to play some Gradius/Salamander again for some cozier shmups and way better music...

I'll just chime in to say I've picked out three Irem arcade games to beat this month. The first one will be the shmup toei recommended to me. I'll try to knock it out either Thursday or Friday. And by "knock it out", I mean shamelessly credit feed to victory. I'm a ∞CC badass.

I'll just chime in to say I've picked out three Irem arcade games to beat this month. The first one will be the shmup toei recommended to me. I'll try to knock it out either Thursday or Friday. And by "knock it out", I mean shamelessly credit feed to victory. I'm a ∞CC badass. Was that Cosmic Cop / Gallop? Cause after making it to to the third stage boss I totally swore off that game. Credit feeding doesn't make a difference with checkpoint-based games. But maybe you've got more patience (or skills) than me. The one I'd really recommend is the NES game Perman. It's a fun, really easy platformer with board game elements. Ken-Go is also good, but you have to know going in that holding the attack button to block and releasing it to attack is how you're supposed to play it, with the basic sword slashes being useful in a few situations rather than the go-to move. I found a flyer for the game and it does explain that. My first impression was negative because I didn't get it at first and it seemed super broken and unfair, but it's really not. Those two and Moon Patrol are the only three Irem games I fully endorse.

No promises on beating that arcade shmup then, but I'll at least sample the experience if nothing else. I saw earlier where you were talking about that one. I missed the "board game elements" bit though, and that aspect sounds intriguing. I'll throw that one in the pile too. Thanks.

Ex Yep, the boss fights are all board game except for the last one. The power-ups you grab in the main levels affect what you can do during those, so the probabilities are usually on your side. Also, there's a translation for the game (romhacking.net as usual), though I beat it before I found out.

I beat Kaiketsu Yancha Maru 3. I like some of the movement tech (staff bounces off the walls, pogo over spikes), but some of the hit detection feels a bit off, and it's a pretty simple game overall. It's also holding up the Irem tradition of having pretty "meh" soundtracks. I don't feel like the game really deserves a lot of verbiage; it was a decent time but not much more. 6/10.
