Gamestop started some sales early online, so I just snagged Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Yoshi's Crafted World for $30 each. (And I had a $5 coupon.) Waiting on Walmart's sale to try to get Luigi's Mansion 3. Also very seriously considering a cheap gaming laptop until I settle on a bigger desktop PC. Both Walmart and Best Buy are supposed to have a solid HP system with either an i5 9th gen or Ryzen 3rd gen with a GTX 1650. Not smoking, but for $450... it's extremely tempting.

It really does sound like laptops have come a long way in recent years. I kind of want a new one around, just for the heck of it.
I think that FE: Three Houses will be the next FE game I check out. That said, I'm really skeptical about the series' recent focus on character relationships, in a Persona-kind of way from what it sounds like. I liked the GBA games a lot but they were just simple yet good classic fantasy war stories and were impressive coming from Nintendo of all things. The series seems a little... different now. But yeah everything I saw and heard around Three Houses does interest me a lot.
So on that note... time to check around for some early Black Friday deals myself...

Yeah, it's gotten more waifu-ish. We'll see how Three Houses turns out. It was cheap enough at this point that I'm down for giving it a go.

Yep, I'm probably going to order it too. Is this a week long sale? I always forget if "Cyber Monday" is before or after Black Friday too.

Well, they do BF stuff earlier and earlier, it seems. I jumped on this before they sold out, because it was definitely one I was interested in. We'll see if I can actually add to the single Fire Emblem game I've beaten.

Fire Emblem is simply not what it used to be. It's kinder and gentler now, with a focus on relationships, waifus, and yeah... romance. Not saying the newer games aren't fun, they might be. But they are obviously pandering to a wider audience intentionally. I'm of the firm belief that Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance was the apex of the series. (I loved that one anyway.)

I'm not sure they're much gentler, though - pretty sure the 3DS entries are pretty tough. Although they have given the option for no permadeath now, which I actually think is a good move. The games were so RNG-heavy that you could easily lose a unit through no fault of your own. (Sometimes you have to take those risks, and if the random number gods do not smile upon thee, well, you get to see a unit nuked for good.)

I'm not sure they're much gentler, though I'm of the mindset that no permadeath is much gentler. That's what used to make FE so incredibly high stakes. You could be deep into a mission, nearly finished with it, then lose your favorite archer or paladin. Then it's reset and lose all mission progress, or march on without that unit henceforth. That's a hard decision to make sometimes. The RNG stuff with these games is overblown in my experience. You should have a good idea of a given unit's odds against a particular enemy unit, if you're paying attention to weapon types and unit strengths. What pisses me off with a FE game, is when it spawns new units suddenly out of nowhere, in a far off previously cleared area of the battlefield, usually where you've got your healing mage camped out for "safety". The randomly spawning enemy units made me rage way more than the RNG ever did.

I heard Three Houses is pretty easy, but it has some good difficulty options. I went ahead and ordered it on the sale, along with the Yakuza 3-5 collection specifically just to play 5. $30 for that seems reasonable!
Actually, just got a bonus from some recent long weeks at work I guess so I splurged...
GS
- Yakuza Collection - FE Three Houses
Amazon: - Trials of Mana 3D (PS4) - Judgement (PS4) - Mega Man Zero/ZX Switch collection (physical sounds a little hard to find) - Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack (Switch) - Xenoblade Chronicles Remastered
Pulled an Ex/Sarge...

I heard Three Houses is pretty easy, but it has some good difficulty options. Cue a little salt.
At one time the Etrian Odyssey series was known for being super difficult dungeon crawlers, and they amassed a dedicated following as a result. Eventually due to outcry from interested parties - who where only deterred by the challenging gameplay - convinced Atlus to implement difficulty options. That started with EO4. The EO series received a massive boost in sales as a result. Turns out most people don't want to play hard games. This same situation repeated itself with Fire Emblem. Nintendo made it possible to play FE games on journalism mode and sprinkled in cute waifus. (This sea-change started with Fire Emblem Awakening in 2012.) While these changes understandably improved sales on a broader spectrum, they also tarnished the soul of what FE was meant to be; An compromising hardcore SRPG. And that irks me a bit. Just as it irks me EO sold out in the same way. Well, that's my Elitist Asshatâ„¢ opinion. That said, if EO and FE hadn't capitulated, maybe the two series would have ended much sooner. Evolve or die? Then again, the Souls games never had this problem. So I don't know.
