In the recent Steam sale I bought Doom Eternal for $20 and began playing it. I dislike how the game holds me hostage at the title screen demanding I create a Bethesda account. Google tells me I can get around it by unplugging my PC from the network, which is a little inconvenient but it seems to work so that's how I've been playing.
So far Doom Eternal is pretty good. It's like if the combat from Batman Arkham Asylum were in first person and involved guns. Doom Eternal does that thing from Doom 2016 where it would just lock you in an arena and make you fight bad guys until they're all dead. You're always running out of health and ammo, but when you kill bad guys they spill those resources like pocket change. It doesn't really remind me of classic Doom at all, and I don't like it as much as Dusk (2018), but I do like games with threat and resource management as their underpinnings. There are also minor platforming challenges in between the combat arenas.
The game runs well on my Ryzen 5 2600 GTX 1070 PC (60+ fps at 1440p). I appreciate how bad guys model damage when I shoot them, with wounds appearing where you'd expect them to. There's a high degree of customization allowing you to hide objective markers and skip all cut scenes, which I do because I don't care about why any of this is happening. I'll probably keep playing this unless it gets too stupid or frustrating.

anayo: What difficulty are you playing on? I think overall Eternal is much harder than 2016. That one I thought was too easy, so I got a little ambitious and started Eternal on UV... somehow I stuck it through the whole way but almost hit my breaking point to lowering the difficulty. It got better and easier the more you unlock abilities, guns, and upgrades, etc.
I agree these modern games aren't really much like old Doom though. They feel like more of a continuation of Quake. I can also see how you and other retro enthusiasts like myself, might favor the likes of Dusk or Ion Fury more.
And yeah it's BS with the Bethesda account stuff. Even worse are the recent forced updates for Doom 2, which adds the 100 splash screen videos, the Bethesda account stuff, etc. You can easily delete the newly createed folders and repaste the old back over everything though, which is what I did and my GZDoom configs were all intact. But they had another forced update again, such a headache. As most people joke, nobody is playing the original Doom's with these crappy Steam dosbox config files anyways and everyone uses sourceports now. Hopefully this is the last time they try to "update" them.

I dislike how the game holds me hostage at the title screen demanding I create a Bethesda account. It's stuff like this in modern gaming that aggravates the bile out of me. I'd be tempted to just quit playing the game entirely at that point, out of spite. Glad you found a workaround though.

I don't remember if I mentioned it, but I ended up adding to my Black Friday purchases with Luigi's Mansion 3 and FFVII Remake. Good times ahead, methinks.

I actually ordered Jedi Fallen Order today myself. Was $30 on Gamestop.

I have soooo many modern games I haven't even played this year. I have Spider-Man GOTY on PS4, DMC5, still haven't gotten back to NieR: Automata, the aforementioned Yoshi's Crafted World and Fire Emblem, Nioh 2, Kingdom Hearts 3... just too many games!

StarCraft II was my last Blizzard game because of that (well I could come up with other reasons, but it was mainly that one.) I simply can't stand all the updates and harassment about internet connection. It is the main reason I don't PC game anymore.

paulofthewest : GOG is the answer! (I'm sure they have games that want to connect to the Internet, though.)

It is the main reason I don't PC game anymore. I'm definitely not a fan of modern PC gaming interfaces. But I still enjoy classic PC gaming, though not as often as I used to. I find it difficult to want to sit and play games on a computer, after having spent an entire day sitting in front of a computer for my dayjob.

Ex & SargeYes, I should have qualified: I don't *modern* PC Game anymore. I did go through Lords of the Realm II + expansion this year. Not a hard game, but fun.
