Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to reading stories of people's drinks condensating down into, or outright spilling into, their XSX consoles: There's no way dumbasses aren't going to put drinks on top of that thing. That concave grill is just a dare.

They both messed up. Just keep it simple. I just hope the PS5 has a black variant.
Even as someone that keeps up with modern gaming news/podcasts and such way more than you guys, I have already forgotten the name of the new Xbox frequently throughout this year. Oh wait... it has no unique name. Searching for this thing is such a pain. All that luck Nintendo got with the "Wii U"? Yeah... have fun with this one, MS. It is an absolute mess looking into the "Xbox" now.
Oh... it's the Xbox Series X, instead of the older current Xbox One X. I'm tired, but who the frick can blame me? Their names are freaking terrible.

I think it probably would have looked better in the two-tone if the white were a different color. I could see a dark gray working. You know there will have to be different SKUs, though, just for this reason. Get the people that can't wait, then get 'em again when they see a better color scheme.
I actually don't hate the Series X design, and I'm pretty sure you can also put it sideways, although I believe vertical like that is optimal for airflow.

I think the PS5 looks weird in 2020 because consumer electronics have been gradually moving toward a utilitarian aesthetic. Hardware used to come in expressive colors and shapes, but now its expected to take the form of an austere black box. Perhaps smartphones were the start of this trend.

Their names are freaking terrible. As boring and utilitarian as their naming scheme is, at least it's simple to know what generation of PlayStation you're dealing with. I believe vertical like that is optimal for airflow. Vertical with the open grill on top is optimal for airflow. It's also optimal for the gravitational collection of dust and particulates on the fan blade(s) and thermal dissipation fins. I think the PS5 looks weird in 2020 because consumer electronics have been gradually moving toward a utilitarian aesthetic. While I'm not particularly sold on the look of the PS5, I appreciate Sony doing something visually different and "thinking outside the box" so to speak.

Maaaan, that is massive. I thought the old PS3 was big.

Yes, for reference I'm pretty sure the original PS3 was the size of the original Xbox, but extra awkward to handle because of all those edges and curves. This looks like that all over again.

Methinks Japanese gamers with their tiny apartments, who are fond of small consoles and handhelds, aren't going to be enamored with Sony's new phallus magnus.

Did you know that Ex-Guerrilla Hermen Hulst is the current Head of Worldwide Sony now? I wonder if he had a hand in this kind of design and some stuff going on with them lately (like censorship).
I'm not too worried about it all yet, but yeah Sony's direction going forward could be a little sketchy here and there as they seem to want to globalize the brand more in ways.
