It's so cringe hearing a lot of people now coming out and talking like the original Demon's Souls is some crusty old broken relic of an ancient past. Yeah this is the aspect of modern players that annoys me a lot, a new console generation is approaching so the stuff from yesterday is irrelevant now!!!?

There's gonna be sooo many cheap PS4s in a few years.

Yeah this is the aspect of modern players that annoys me a lot, a new console generation is approaching so the stuff from yesterday is irrelevant now!!!? That's the way it always goes. Most gamers seem to consider any game over a year old as "ancient". The "Cult of the New" is one of the biggest problems this medium faces. anayoOh yeah. I'm thinking deep holiday discounts are coming on still brand new PS4s as well. Retailers gotta make shelf space for the PS5. That's when I'll be sweeping in.

The PS5 and XBOXSX are supposed to target 4k 60fps, but I wonder if you connect them to a high frame rate 1080p monitor, will they render at a lower their internal resolution with a correspondingly high frame rate? 1080p 120 fps or something?

My guess is that several devs will target that, yeah. It's common in the PC space, so I'd be shocked if we don't continue to see significant convergence between PC and console gaming.

The new console SSD tech will throw a wrench into things too. Even though SSD's have been a thing for years now, it really does sound like the PS5 one at least is a lot more advanced than what you can get off shelves.
This is probably the most compelling thing to me with the upcoming generation, will they finally surpass my dated PC? I actually hope so but I'll have to see it to believe.

It will be the usual - surpass for a bit, then fall behind. This happens pretty often, honestly.

I honestly don't think the PS4/X1 era did that at all though, they were dated pretty much out of the gate.
Funny enough I guess the PS4 came out in 2013, which is when I built my rig and I'm pretty sure I waited on the PS4 and got it later in 2014 along with a handful of games. I didn't go crazy with my PC build either, but my first GPU was a HIS Radeon HD 7950 3 GB (384bit) GDDR5 and it was already able to do way more than what the early PS4 games were doing. I upgraded to a GeForce GTX 1060 next and that blew it out of the water. I've got a 2060 now, trying to keep this rig going for as long as possible heh.

Yeah my understanding is that when the XBOX 360 came out, you couldn't get a comparable gaming PC for that retail price. It didn't stay that way forever, but for people who weren't married to the idea of gaming on a PC and nothing else, it turned the console vs. PC value proposition on its head for a while. I think we're about to see something similar with PS5 and XBOXSX.

That's a good point on the 360/PS3 era. I was just rocking an old Dell Latitude laptop during those years. So my advanced gaming was on consoles then.
I should remember that I spent double on my PC than I did on the PS4 as well. To be fair...
But yeah, I say all this as someone who still likes console gaming more in ways to be honest. I'll probably always favor the TV+controller experience a bit more. I just hope the PS5 will really wow me and feel pretty advanced. Since I didn't really get that vibe with the PS4.
