I've seen base model xbox ones for as low as $80 pre-owned. However my understanding is that only the xbox one s offers any framerate improvements when playing older xbox titles. I would personally go for a xbox one x for the price range you indicated - not for any of its contemporary games, but for the novelty of playing Ninja Gaiden Black and Panzer Dragon Orta and so forth in 4K. Hmm that's good to know. Yeah it's almost solely Ninja Gaiden Black that makes me want one of these haha.
With them stopping production on the Xbox One X now... I can't tell how the prices will go. Maybe they'll be phased out and super cheap, or become sought after rarities that command a higher price over time? If anything though, the last two generations got really cheap hardware and software wise for Xbox, compared to the other consoles. Wonder if that will be the case this time too.
I think backwards compatibility works like this: base xbox one: plays legacy games, no improvements xbox one s: plays legacy games, sometimes improves framerate xbox one x: plays legacy games, generally improves framerate, sometimes improves resolution, sometimes even improves LODs (like grass rendering distance in Halo 3) I find it hard to predict where xbox one prices will go because there are supposedly 60 million or so in the wild (comparable to Sega Genesis sales numbers I guess) but an XBOX Series X is supposed to do everything an XBOX One X can do, just better. I've never seen a precedent for modest hardware sales numbers coinciding with the total obsolescence of that hardware.

Yeah along the lines of that, this came up in one of my gaming podcasts... can you imagine a casual / parent trying to buy a new console in the next year or two? Xbox is coining crazy new phases like "Console launch exclusive" (which means, who the heck knows?*), you have the weird half step Pro/X consoles we got this gen, the Series X can do everything yet Xbox "doesn't want to leave anyone behind" now. I guess like people have been saying this gen, consoles are becoming more like PC's at this point and now you have to do research before purchasing a simple console.
*Oh there's an answer now: We've now gotten confirmation as part of tonight's Xbox Games Showcase that the game is, in fact, a console launch exclusive. What does the term 'console launch exclusive' mean? It means that the game won't be permanently held off other platforms, and will instead be only held off temporarily.

Would someone like to tell me what in the heck is going on with the prices for Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse? It's been quite stable and now, all of a sudden, the prices have shot through the roof, mostly starting at just the beginning of this year. Is it COVID? Renewed interest in SMT5? Something else? Maybe too much bath salts?
Same deal with SMTIV... at least I already own that one.

Yikes. www.pricecharting.com/game/nintendo-3ds/shin-megami-tensei-ivI think something weird might be going on though, perhaps it is the pandemic. I've seen a lot of game listings on Amazon omit the price on the front page of searches, way more than normal lately.
I've been surprised though, even on handhelds do JRPG's still get shorter print runs or just always command higher prices? Keeps seeming like I should scoop up a few that interest me sooner than later. I don't pay attention to handhelds much, but I guess I kind of assumed knowing how well they sell that collecting for them would be easy...

Would someone like to tell me what in the heck is going on with the prices for Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse? I wager with the impending port of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne for Switch, the news has intrigued quite a few gamers into seeking out earlier SMT releases in anticipation. Right now Amazon is showing the game at $199.99 for a new copy of SMT4:A! That's pretty crazy considering Amazon shows I paid $42.79 for my new copy back in October 2016. Keeps seeming like I should scoop up a few that interest me sooner than later. That is a good idea in general. There are more gamers now than ever before. More greedy hands to scoop up the goods and hold onto those goods into perpetuity.

I can't imagine 3DS emulation is all that great either, or maybe kind of a cluster considering the hardware? Even if a game doesn't use the gimmick. SMT4 looked even more sci-fi and interesting to me than the PS2 games when I saw a friend show some of it off once, but I guess I would like to hit those PS2 games up first. One of the handheld Devil Summoners is like $200 now too. Hopefully I can get lucky and grab some of these someday, or maybe 3DS games get a reprint at some point? I scooped up Nocturne and the Digital Devil Saga's when they got a reprint on the PS2 a handful of years ago, but still way later than the PS2's lifetime. That was an interesting situation you don't see everyday.

Though... perhaps you, take it to the extreme. My wife and daughter who know me better than anyone, have both told me on separate occasions, that whenever I get into anything, I always do it overkill. Yeah that follows into my video game collecting. Hence I own 120 physical 3DS games. But it boils down to this; I'd rather have those games already so when/if I do decide to play them, I can and won't have to pay $200 to do so. I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. It's more likely they'd get ported to PC or Switch first. I also took advantage of that situation. But those games were still DVD-based, so the game media was easy to acquire for a reprint. The 3DS used a custom cartridge format, and the factories that were cranking those custom cartridges out, are likely all retooled for cranking out Switch cartridges now.

Persona 4 blew up on Steam when they finally put it on PC recently. I'm sure 5 is coming too. It would be cool if Atlus starts getting more of SMT ported around to newer platforms as well, but have we seen any 3DS to Switch ports yet? I'm sure it's happened maybe, but I'm drawing a blank. Seems like it would be easy money... but you know Nintendo sometimes. Wait, does SEGA own SMT though? Pretty sure they own Persona. Not sure if that's a packaged deal or not though. But yeah, I'm pretty sure SEGA is seeing a lot of success in recent years with them porting a bunch of stuff to PC as of lately. I hope that trend continues. I'd more than likely be a bigger collector than I am if I had more disposable income. For me, my family will often joke about how I am far better at handling money than my parents ever were. At the same time though, my old roommate was truly frugal. And I mean, there's nothing wrong with that... but we are close enough friends that we'd sometimes drop financial details from time to time and I was always shocked at how much money he'd be sitting on in his savings, while being the type when we first moved in he didn't even have a proper bed setup. He was just doing the mattress on the floor thing, with a random ass coffee table for his TV stand, etc. I will at least buy practical things for around the house and make everyday living easier. But yeah that guy, phew. On a related note, this payday week is my first for two weeks with the 15% differential in this new department and I hate to report, I was honestly NOT that impressed by the difference. Was expecting a bit more.

Wouldn't surprise me if a bigger chunk of taxes is being taken out. I've got like half the 3DS games Ex does, so he's definitely got quite the collection.

have we seen any 3DS to Switch ports yet? Not that I can think of off hand. And you make a good point. We might not see 3DS Atlus games that fully utilized both screens get ported to single screen platforms. Sure some of the DS Atlus games were up-ported and half-ass remade for 3DS, but that was dual screen to dual screen, so the gameplay didn't have to change. That said, we did see SQEX port The World Ends with You to single screen platforms, so it can be done if the financial interest is there. Maybe if Nocturne and SMT5 sell well on Switch, SEGA/Atlus may decide to bring SMT4/A on over to Switch as well. SEGA owns Atlus, so I assume SEGA owns SMT as a result. My wife is the opposite of me, super frugal. When she creates budgets she always forgets "Entertainment" as one of the columns. And yeah she's WAY more frugal than me. There are only a few things her and I ever argue about, and money is #1. I'm actually quite frugal in general, but she's on a whole other ascetic tier that I just can't resonate with. (By the way, I recommend this book for personal budgeting.) I've got like half the 3DS games Ex does, so he's definitely got quite the collection. True, but I don't own even a single 3rd, 4th, or 5th gen console game. So you've got me beat by miles there.
I physically own a decent amount of 6th gen console games, a ridiculous amount of 7th gen console games, a ludicrous amount of 8th gen handheld games, and an insane amount of physical PC games.
