I think there are games in the "new" style that are still crazy fun, and games that did some things better back in the day. Like FPS design - I still like the simpler DOOM/Descent-style stuff. Which makes it pretty funny that id went back to that well with the new DOOM reboots. Or the retro-styled games like Ion Fury using actual engines from back then. Pretty neat stuff (and I still need to buy that game).

I'm going to post this here since it fits what you guys are talking about right now. Maybe some of you have heard the rumblings that 2K is pricing the next gen NBA game at $69.99. People have been speculating for years that the big 70 is coming... I think this take on it is one of the best I've heard so far. The first guy who responds (Alex in the top left) is extremely naive in thinking this will diminish publishers nickel and diming people with DLC and crap. It's the other two older dudes on the right that I think have the far more interesting takes, especially Dan Tack's on the top right... this potential spike might have a weird effect in making people go in even harder on Xbox's Gamepass and other digital services, while flat out buying less games in the future... truly moving towards the idea that people are up for fully relinquishing ownership for games. I think it's scary stuff. I know some here would argue, I don't truly own anything on my Steam account, sure. But streaming games in the Netflix like model and only having them for X amount of time is a whole different thing to me that I don't like at all.
I know inflation is a thing. And we've enjoyed $60 for a very long time. But I think it's insane I tend to see way, way more people in random comments everywhere that are excited at the fact of having to spend MORE money on a single game in the near future. Am I nuts thinking THEY'RE NUTS? If more publishers follow 2K, there will be no turning back.
$70 for physical games seems fine considering inflation but if they want $70 for digital games that's stupid.

That's how it will be, though.

if they want $70 for digital games that's stupid $70 for digital games that you don't actually own, that are only 3/4ths finished, in need of future patching to be "100%" (or to run at an acceptable framerate). I use quotations, because swaths of content that should be in the original game, is instead sectioned off for future DLC. It's clear to anyone with clarity of mind, that much of today's AA/AAA gaming is a rigged racket. ANTI-CONSUMER! Now excuse me, while I go outside and yell at clouds which vaguely resemble naive modern gamers.

Scrap everything after the PS2 gen and don't worry about updates anymore. It's tempting man, it's tempting.

Scrap everything after the PS2 gen and don't worry about updates anymore. It's tempting man, it's tempting. It's so liberating to not worry about it all. I also was never a fan of online gaming, though, so if you are, I can see that presenting a slight issue.

I also was never a fan of online gaming, though, so if you are I am not. I do not engage in online gaming at all. Right now the newest consoles I own are PS3/360/Wii U. (The newest handhelds I own are Vita and 3DS units.) And it already bothers me that my 360 and PS3 games often need to be updated for bug and performance patching. What bothers me, is the fact that those patch servers are not going to be online forever. There will come a day, where I won't be able to download patches for PS3 or 360 games. Now extrapolate that to the One/PS4... many of those games are practically unplayable without patching, from what I've read and hear anecdotally. What kind of longevity do those 8th gen games have? Then go even further to a world of all digital games. Preservation viability for this medium is dwindling with each successive generation.

Yeah, some are terrible. And think of a game like No Man's Sky, where the experience now is so far removed from its original launch state that it might as well be a brand new game.

The PS3 and 360 were going to be my last consoles, but before collecting for them got underway, they were the first to receive the ax. There are some great games on there for them (3D Dot Game Heroes and Raiden IV respectively), but less is more sometimes. And the less dealing with updates/patches/bad connections, the better. I then went backward, selling my PSP, DS, GCN, etc. The only things from the 00s I have are PS2 and GBA, and I'm happy stopping there.
