Yep, it was the sequel, and I even forget about it myself since it doesn't sport that bright red cart shell.
I'm pretty tempted to spin them up myself. I know they're not top-tier (seriously, Batman Returns and Turtles in Time are the two best games that fit in this theme), but they're still pretty competent.

I made it to stage 4-2 in Batman: Return of the Joker for NES tonight. This game not only has infinite continues, but also a password system. So I wrote down the password and called it a night. I'll try to finish it saturday night. This is what the back of the box says: That sounds like pure hyperbole I know, but honestly it's not too far from the truth. This game is amazing graphically for a NES entry. Easily some of the most impressive pixels I've seen on the platform... The first stage has parallax scrolling skies, animated flames, and Batman himself animates impressively - especially his flowing cape. Special effects like foreground transparencies give a feeling of depth. This snow stage's trees vibrate in the wind, and there's a convincing falling snowflake effect that this static picture cannot portray. Here's a boss. Unfortunately since Mesen emulates sprite flickering, the screenshot didn't capture Batman himself. Here's a shmup designed level, with fast moving tiles and more delicious parallax scrolling. When you collect enough of a certain power-up, Batman goes all Super Saiyan for a while. Each stage has a unique clear image. toei if you're at all interested, I'll say that this Batman game does not have a wall jump. Instead it has a floor slide. No idea if you'd like this one or not, but you have to at least admit this is a good looking NES game. ;p

I tried that game when I went through a bunch of Batman games last year. The sprite size definitely impressed me. The only thing that really marks it as NES game visually is those colors, and even then they look a little better than usual (Batman's got 4 instead of 2. 5 if you count the black). In my memories movement felt kind of funky, though. It's also got awful outsourced 16-bit ports that were never released. I think they're fully playable, but they're also not really playable.

On the other hand, the 8-bit Game Boy port is supposed to be pretty good. Although it's not really a port, as level designs and such are unique. I might check it out this later month. For now though, after this NES game, I want to try other stuff besides Batman.

Even beyond the insane static sprite work in Return of the Joker, I thought the animations were crazy too. Batman and his cape looked extremely smooth in motion, must have made a lot of frames for everything. Great stuff.
And yeah the cancelled SNES port looks atrocious.

Yep. I actually played that prototype for a bit. Sometimes games get cancelled cause they just suck a lot.

It's a shame Sunsoft just kind of fell flat during the 16bit era.

I beat RotJ on Game Boy late last year. I thought I'd given it a solid rating. I didn't. Not by a long shot. Basically, it looks and sounds fantastic, but is a chore to play due to the slippery controls. And by extension, you also now know what I thought of the Genesis Superman game. toei: Was poking around for comparisons of the Genesis and SNES versions of Maximum Carnage, and didn't realize you had written the HG101 article on them! Great job, man.

Yeah I wanted to ask toei , from your review with the screenshot comparisons at the end... are these direct side by side comparisons of the same exact spots in the game? Pretty big difference I'd say, if so.
Genesis vs SNES

Xeogred Those screenshots are mislabeled. This must have happened when I moved the article to the new site. The top row is SNES, bottom row Genesis. I just fixed it. Sarge Thanks!
