Alright, folks, I'm on a little kick here. Between snagging ChainDive and Sword of Etheria, I'm interested in expanding my palate of PS2 "hidden gems". I know a lot about the US market (although I'll certainly take those recs), but I'm very curious as to what English-friendly games exist in Japan, or what other imports from Europe might be worthwhile.
EDIT: Well, darn, that ISO I got for ChainDive was busted, or it just doesn't work with Open PS2 Loader. Sword of Etheria worked great, though. And it has a soundtrack by Michiru Yamane, which means I should probably track that down, too.

Haven't gotten around to playing Demon Chaos, but the claim that it can have over 64000 enemies on screen at once sounds intriguing:
Is Bujingai obscure? That's another one I want to check out.

There are tons of PS2 games that were only released in Japan, unfortunately. That's a really deep mine to dig in. I wouldn't even begin to say I've thoroughly explored all the options there myself, but I've done some rooting around in the past. Man if you'd asked me this question eleven years ago I could have named all sorts of stuff off the top of my head! I'm a bit rusty on the subject now, but this is a cool idea for a thread nonetheless. (Also a lot of the obscure Japanese PS2 stuff I enjoyed back in 2007/2008 had an ecchi slant, so I won't bother posting those. I doubt you'd be into Super Galdelic Hour for instance.) I'm betting you know which Japanese PS2 games have gotten English fan translations so far, but for those that don't: link Anyway I'll have to get back to you on the Japanese-only stuff. As for PAL, that's a little easier. So here are some PAL action games that you might like, that did not release in the USA: Here are two PAL adventure games I personally beat, which weren't released in the USA: Well, that's a start!

Obscure PAL only game which I've beaten: It's actually very good. Conversely, this is a game that was never released in Europe: I suppose it's kind of obscure? I'd like to play it, but it can't be emulated properly.

Thanks for the knowledge so far! I'm going to check those out for sure.
I do have both Bujingai and Okage. I kept up with PS2 gaming very closely back in the day, at least on the US side. A bit of a side effect of having multiple magazine subscriptions at the time. I've been meaning to give Bujingai a fair shake, and Okage is one I started, but like many RPGs, didn't actually stick with.

When I heard some friends talk about Bujingai many years ago and stumbled upon some ancient video of it, it blew my mind:
Unfortunately, when I got around to actually playing it I didn't care for it. It feels a bit like the Genji mold, way more style over substance. It was kind of like Shinobi PS2 as well. Some of these action games just haven't aged very well to me, especially when they feel weird and floaty.
That video sure gets me pumped still, a shame.
Anyways, for as rare as the PSX entry already is, I have yet to meet another human that has played its direct sequel, Galerians Ash.

Well, uh, you've met one now. I haven't beaten it, but I've definitely played it, and still own a copy.

I actually own Bujingai, but I'm pretty bitter about it. I just bought it because of the cover. I thought the main character was going to be a girl. Turns out that was Gackt instead.

I can definitely see why you'd think that. The US box art is much more generic. Also, I figured out why the ChainDive ISO didn't work. It's apparently a bad rip, the ISOFS portion is busted. EDIT: Aaaand it's working. Mounting using MagicISO and installing that way worked. Weird, but I'll take it. ChainDive is... different. Not sure I like it yet.
