I agree. I'd love to see a JRPG with fully mature characters. I agree with that Persona idea, too. To some degree, To the Moon explores some of these ideas, although I can't really talk about it on this side of the board. I still hope they follow it up, because there are some ideas they should really explore, especially with negative consequences that it looked like they might do, then just kinda dropped it at the end.

Well, it's interesting that the next (new? I haven't really been keeping up) Yakuza game is a turn-based RPG, cause that series features adult characters, and it's certainly a very atypical setting for a turn-based RPG.

Yakuza is amazing. It felt like I went that direction in recent years instead of the Persona path. And I don't regret it at all. I have Xenoblade for my anime fix.

I really don't care for the direction modern Persona took. I like the battle system, but I'd much rather they stuck with the somewhat grittier style of the early games (and in particular Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment).

I've only beaten the first two Yakuza games, both on PS2. I loved them both. A bit like River City Ransom if RCR didn't suck and was actually fun. I've got Yakuza 3, 4, and the zombie one on PS3, but haven't played them yet.
I own a few Persona games. I've got P3 on PS2 and PSP, PS4G on Vita, and PS5 on PS3. The only one I've tried to play so far was P3 on PSP (AKA P3P). I put about 12 hours in it and that was all I could take. Persona 3 was some of the most repetitive vapid bullshit excuse for a JRPG I've ever played. Thanks to that unfulfilling experience, I haven't attempted P4G or P5 yet. It seems to me Persona is meant to simulate being a cool high school kid, who has a fun clique to hang out with, while solving Scooby Doo stuff. Or to be mean about it, Persona lets awkward loners feel like they have a life.

To be mean about it, Donkey Kong Country lets hungry losers feel like they're eating hundreds of bananas. To be mean about it, Castlevania lets awkward S&M-loving goths feel like whip-whielding vampire hunters. (let's keep this going) - Also, it's rare that I hear anyone say that RCR isn't all that great, but I totally agree it's overrated (and I say this as a big fan of Technos' beat-'em-ups). Or maybe you already mentioned it in the controversial opinion thread and I forgot.

To be mean about it, Castlevania lets awkward S&M-loving goths feel like whip-wielding vampire hunters. Seems legit.
