Eh, I could never tolerate that one for more three stages. I disagree that the stages are short. They feel like an eternity. There's just nothing going on, your basic shot is super weak (plus no auto-fire as you mentioned), and the method for power-ups is weird and inadequate so you never end up with a decent weapon. To me it's maybe a 3 out of 10 at most, especially if you compare it to GG Aleste. About the only thing I like is the graphics. It's impressive how much it looks like the Genesis Magic Taruruto-kun that came out a year later (which is a very basic side-scroller instead of a very basic shooter, and is only notable for being an early Game Freak game).

I think your criticisms are fair toei. The stages would certainly feel longer if you were actively hating every moment of play. We are at least in agreement about the graphics, they're pretty good all things considered. As a shmup the game isn't very good, but it has other charms I appreciated.

Uh, that's a totally legit win with Dragon Crystal. Yes. It was. Except for all that save-stating at the very end. I didn't dislike it, although as Ex 's old review says, the game gets brutal at the end. I also messed myself over a bit fighting the slugs. I thought they were temporarily reducing my strength, but no! It's a permanent drop. Later on, you'll find ones that sap energy, and even entire levels! Evil! Oh, and there are eyeball enemies that can rust your armor and weapons. That's... not good. I actually fought them by unequipping my good stuff, at least the armor ones. My biggest problem at the end was that I didn't find halfway decent armor, so I was getting pounded. Ironically, I had the weapon I needed, though: the Dragonblade. It hits the mess out of all the dragons in the last stage, but I just couldn't absorb any punishment from them. I think I could pull a better run, but I'm probably done with it for now. I'd say what's here is decent, so I'll give it a 6/10.

Sarge The good news if you enjoyed it at all is that most console roguelikes of this type are better. Fatal Labyrinth on the Genesis (this game's... prequel? I think it actually came out a bit earlier) is better, Taloon's Great Adventure is better than either, Shiren the Wanderer and Torneko: The Last Hope are better than all three... this is a cool genre to play now and then. And if you want an easy one, either Chocobo's Dungeon 2 or the Pokemon Mysterious Dungeons are good choices.

Yeah, occasionally I will actually play one. I happen to know that there are others that let you keep more of your progress throughout the game, or at least hit checkpoints so that when you die, you don't go all the way back to the start. Of course, this is much more patterned on, well, Rogue, right down to the multiple items where you don't know their effects. And I actually recently picked up Chocobo's Dungeon 2, mainly to fill in one more divot in my PSX library. Still gotta buy those King's Field games, though. That will happen. The weird thing with me and rogue-likes is that when I play them, I don't hate them, but I don't love them either. I think some of the genre nuances are lost on me at times.

I think I could pull a better run, but I'm probably done with it for now. I'd say what's here is decent, so I'll give it a 6/10. Man I'm proud of you for gaming outside your comfort zone and finishing a roguelike. I think your 6/10 is a fair score. Dragon Crystal is laudable for a few reasons, but it's certainly not the best in its genre by a mile (even if only counting console entries). I mean, it's no Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer. Still super cool you stuck with the experience and finished it. I have a super love/hate relationship with this game. There was many a weekend night when I was in high school where I got so close to beating Fatal Labyrinth... only to be thwarted right at the very end. It's a brilliantly sadistic thing. This game's background music is forever etched into my memory. Speaking of gaming outside our comfort zone, the GG game I'm playing right now is in a genre I normally avoid. But, I hope to have it finished tonight.

Yeah, I figure playing a Shiren game might be better. I'm pretty sure I picked up the DS game, which is supposed to be good, and I know I have the Wii entry we got. I also happen to have Torneko's Mystery Dungeon, and have had it for a long time. There's also games like Azure Dreams, which also have a lot of rogue-like stuff.

There's also games like Azure Dreams, which also have a lot of rogue-like stuff. That one has been on my "I need to try this" list for a long time. There's a surprising amount of roguelikes on console and handhelds actually. The best stuff (outside PC) I've played were the Shiren entries though.

Azure Dreams seemed kind of weak when I tried it. Both the PSX and GBC games. Torneko is really good, though. Really, you can't go wrong with the Mysterious Dungeon games if you like console roguelikes, and Shiren is their one flagship, non-licensed characters, so there's something special about the series. I'd recommend starting with the SNES game just cause it's the first, but I'm sure the DS game is good anyway. What I like about console / Japanese roguelikes is that they're meant to be actually beaten. There's a lot of chance involved, of course, but they give you a few tools that lets you steadily progress. The exception is Fatal Labyrinth (and Dragon Crystal), which are just basically a dungeon.

Torneko is really good, though. I played a bit of the original SFC entry a few years back, it did seem solid. The Shiren DS entry we got localized is a port of the original SFC Shiren. But there's later DS Shiren entries that remain Japanese only (for now). True. Did you ever try The Nightmare of Druaga or Dragon Quest: Shōnen Yangus to Fushigi no Dungeon? The former I own a copy of (not tried yet), the latter looks great - I wish it had an English patch. IIRC this was the first roguelike made for a console, or at least the first Japanese roguelike for a console. And yeah, good luck beating Fatal Labyrinth (without savestates). I still love it. And hate it.
