Ex: 'cuz I'm being weird. (It's more I'm experimenting with stuff a little further off the beaten path.) I have booted up Triple Trouble, though, and played a few stages. I was also mulling over Tails Adventure. Believe it or not, though, that McDonald's game is considered pretty good. But I also picked up Shining Force III: Final Conflict the other day, and it's legit. I still don't know why more strategy games don't implement movement/attacking controls from that series - it feels much less cumbersome the way Shining Force implements it.

But I also picked up Shining Force III: Final Conflict the other day, and it's legit. I am interested in playing through the Shining Force games on GG too. Along with a few other GG JRPGs. I just put those off for now, because I'm already playing a JRPG as my main, with another JSRPG and WRPG unfinished on the back burners at present. I recognize though the GG has some solid RPGs in its roster (of various sub-genres).

So I'm up to Tidal Plant Zone 2 in Triple Trouble. So far, it's been decent, but it really hasn't hooked me in. I think I've figured out why, at least for this entry, and it's mostly to do with smoothness and screen real estate. It feels like a lot of times, Sonic is stuck in mud even more than usual, and that his acceleration curve seems to vary based on how much the game is straining to keep the frame rate up. I don't think it's the emulator that's giving me this feeling, but it feels like the speed tends to wobble back and forth a lot.
The other big thing (literally) is Sonic's sprite, which has been upsized from the previous two games. It robs you of a lot of screen real estate, making things feel a little claustrophobic. And you really have to go fairly slow, perhaps more than usual, or you're going to have a hard time exploring or keeping your rings.
I figure I'll finish it tonight, but from the testing I've done, I like the feel of the first two Sonic games a lot more.

SargeIt took me a while to get used to playing the SML games on GB, because their physics were so different from the console games. The complaint about the real estate being robbed by large sprites, is something that affected me in SML2, and even more so in the Wario GB/C games. It's all a compromise in trying to show detailed graphics using lower resolutions, so making the sprites larger is the result. So my point is that some of the stuff you're not liking in Triple Trouble is also prevalent in some of Nintendo's handheld platformers. That said, the slow down is a different story. I won't deny that GG action games are often plagued by considerable slowdown. It's not something that's a deal breaker for me though. Actually the slowdown sometimes helps by giving me more reaction time in high intensity situations. It's still vexing not knowing if this situation is caused by inadequate hardware or inadequate programming.

Oh, I agree with that. Super Mario Land 2 is another big example of big sprites crowding the screen. In some ways, I actually like the simple graphics of the original SML, just from a spacing standpoint. The wonky physics are also still a sticking point. I do think the primary difference, though, is that Sonic is a series that purports to want to go fast, and gives you the tools to do so. In that sense, losing screen real estate hurts a lot more in those games than in the Mario games, where you're practically encouraged to be a little more pokey.
Given what I've seen Compile do, or what some other Game Gear/SMS games do even when they get busy, I'd put it on some programming rather than hardware incapability. Either that, or it's a case where they prized graphical fidelity over smoothness, which isn't uncommon on pretty much any platform.

Sarge Triple Trouble was conceived so that you can pretty much just run forward all the time and rarely, if ever, die. All you have to do is make sure to keep a ring. Carefully exploring and grabbing as many rings as you can is how I play Sonic 1, but for the later games it isn't necessary.

IIRC you find the Chaos Emeralds hidden in the levels of Triple Trouble and Sonic Chaos. So you don't have to have high ring counts to access their acquisition areas. At any rate, I play those games as toei described. Gotta go fast and keep that one ring.

Well, I'm poking around for the emeralds, although I've missed them the last few stages. Only got three opportunities left... and three to get. I might consider dropping back to an older save state to have more opportunities.

I was looking into Game Gear Sonic the Hedgehog 1-2, but they just sound like remixed versions of the SMS titles honestly. Seems like 2 on the GG has the reputation of being one of the hardest Sonic's, I can say the brief time I spent playing a Game Gear at a friend's (maybe like at one or two sleepovers, so not much), yeah I don't recall ever getting far in that one. Not a fan of the weird minecart stuff.

Not a fan of the weird minecart stuff. I played this one at friend's too, quite a few times, and I remember always struggling to beat the first boss. In retrospect, the pattern is easy, but they don't even give you any ring for it. Not the last boss like Genesis Sonic 2, the first boss. That sets the tone for the hardest Sonic right there. It's a well-made game too, though, don't get me wrong.
