Hmm, yeah I am a little tempted to play 2 at least. It sounds the most different from the SMS version, but the first is probably skippable if you just play the SMS one. I might even hit up that NGP Sonic sooner than later and those GBA games, which I probably won't love, but I think I've heard they're decent. I could go for some more Sonic and there's still a few of the traditional ones I haven't played yet.
EDIT: Wow, I thought I played at least one of the Sonic Advance games, but after watching some videos now I'm not sure and they look pretty awesome. Maybe I just have bad memories of Sonic Rush (DS) from that era.

The Sonic Advance games are solid. I can't vouch for level designs, as I clearly don't know what makes for a good Sonic game, but they feel good to control. And do tell me how you like the NGPC one if you hit it up: I'd like to see it through the eyes of a series fan.
I just finished off Triple Trouble. I'm gonna be honest, it still didn't click with me. I'm pretty decent at controlling Sonic in other games, but this one just feels off to me. I can see glimmers of good design, and it looks nice, but it's still sitting at a 6/10 for me. I'll also note that while you find Chaos Emeralds through the stages, you actually have to hit the box that has the icon while you're holding 50 rings, or it won't let you go to the bonus stage where you actually get the Emerald. So you really do need to play it more safely if you want the best ending... which I didn't do. I really didn't feel like spending the last world combing around for where the Emerald mini-stages were hidden, and it's certainly much harder to hang on to the requisite 50 rings.

I did what Ex did, looked up the "good ending"... which, by getting all the Emerald's, you're granted the privilege of seeing the credits!
To be fair, a mere happy splash image for "good endings" was often commonplace back then I guess haha.

You know, I don't think I like GG Aleste 2 at all. It's a confusing mess visually, there's too much crap on-screen, too much weird flickering, and there isn't enough to distinguish enemies and backgrounds and shots and your own weapons and sub-weapons from one another. 2/3rd of the time, when I die, I don't know what happened. I've played plenty of shmups that were more intense and faster-paced where this didn't happen, and it didn't happen in the first game, either. I also don't like the weapons as much - what happened to the Wave weapon? Why is the laser so lame now? - and the first boss has the weirdest, most nonsensical pattern. So yeah, I've tried to get into it a bunch of times and it's just not clicking.

I really appreciate how diverse all of our opinions are concerning these Game Gear releases.
Hopefully the rest of this week is a bit easier on my free time, so I can hop back in on this train.

Definitely a lot of flickering. And I agree, the laser isn't nearly as awesome. There's so much going on that I swapped to that Delta weapon so it would absorb most shots.

Sarge I kind of hate the Delta weapon, though, can I don't quite get what it absorbs and what it doesn't. It seems that every now and then a shot will just slip through at random, so you never know whether you should dodge or not. Not dodging makes it feel like you're not really playing the game to me, and then having three pods as large as your ship circling around it at all times really adds to the visual clutter. GG Aleste 2 had a different director than the first game, and I feel that the guy who handled it didn't have as good a grasp on certain design elements that the first was really good at. I'm really big on what I think of as "clean" game design, and that game feels messy to me.

My favorite Game Gear shmup is still Pop Breaker. I've mentioned it before, but in the vain hope of getting someone else to try it, I'm mentioning it again. This is a shmup/puzzle hybrid, and it's very good. Here's somebody failing the first mission:
This game gets very complex and crazy later on. I enjoyed beating it a few years back.

I thought I'd tried Pop Breaker, but that gameplay footage doesn't look that familiar. I'll give it a shot.

I'll be sure to give it a shot before the month is up, in that case.
