I wonder what the best PSX era Armored Core is as well I've beaten, and greatly enjoyed, all the AC entries on PS1. This was my favorite out of the three: I'm planning on playing Armored Core 2: Another Age myself for this theme. That's the entry I'm currently up to via playing through the series in order. (It's the 5th release in the franchise.) Yes, this is it: I've beaten and enjoyed that one as well. It's not the same as the PC version. Less a simulator, more an arcade shooter. This version is also on Saturn. But uh, I'd stick with PS1. Cool. It's on my list too. Although my list has risen to 14 entries at present. No way to beat 'em all in just a month! Certainly no shortage of options though. So does anyone have some Genesis / Mega Drive mecha recs? I've beaten Ranger X, it's pretty good. I'd give it a 7.5/10 personally. Very gorgeous well programmed game, but some of the latter stages bugged me. For Genesis I recommend:

Nice! Plenty of great options.
So Battletech and MechWarrior are one in the same? This reminds me of this franchise' secret origins, there is a connection to the 1981 Sunrise anime Dougram (which I've seen and love).
Here's a nice read too:

Xeogred I won't discourage you from trying any one of those, but keep in mind that to everyone but Ex, Heavy Nova is one of the worst games of all the time. It's wretched. Here's an example of a fight:

I looked up footage of all of those and yeah, the VS parts of that game look pretty wack. But navigating the levels like a normal platformer doesn't seem all that bad.
Among all of those, ESWAT looked really solid. I think I may have played that Battletech game at some point growing up too, or it's the striking *drum roll* resemblance to the Strike games.

The game is mostly fighting, and the platforming part is super clunky and unpleasant. But try it! There are two E-SWAT games you might want to check out, btw; the arcade original is a completely different game and is a bit closer to Shinobi, except you can take a lot more hits. It's pretty good. The Genesis game is basically a sequel, with 100% new levels and pretty different gameplay, same as they did with Shadow Dancer. Speaking of which, I thought I wasn't going to participate, but maybe I'll give Genesis E-SWAT a shot later in March.

It's not that I think Heavy Nova is awesome or anything, I'd give it a 6/10. I have a soft spot for it, because I had the game as a teenager. That said, I do enjoy the sense of "weightiness" that the mechs exude, and knocking another mech down always feels satisfying in Heavy Nova. I also enjoy the bass in the OST: Give the game a try Xeogred, feel how it plays for yourself. Even if you don't want to finish it, beating a few mechs down is worth doing. Edit: Also this game is AMAZINLY EXCITING!The box art even says so.

I got a head start on this and beat the first mission (Jade Falcon clan) in MechWarrior 2. I've got to get my controls worked out, though. I skipped the training, but muddled through, but I need to figure out how to free aim using the mouse so I can do some strafing.
I had to roll with the DOS install, 'cause Windows 7 says "NOPE" to the '95 version.

I've got to get my controls worked out, though. I remember when I beat MW3, I had like 2/3rds of the keyboard hotmapped. IIRC that game came with a keyboard overlay actually. Anytime you got one of those in the box, you knew you were in for some serious stuff.

I probably still have that keyboard overlay somewhere. We never threw manuals away. I've got a whole box of 'em in the game room, including a bunch of awesomely huge manuals for stuff like Master of Orion 2.

I probably still have that keyboard overlay somewhere. Mine's probably in a big tupperware box in the attic. I've got a few boxes up there full of video/computer game boxes and manuals. Good things to hold on to. I'm sure lots of people wish they still had their NES cardboard boxes. - Xeogred Since you said that you were interested in PS1, here's a few PS1 mech rec's: '70s Robot Anime: Geppy-X Epidemic Future Cop: L.A.P.D. Gear Senshi Dendoh Ghost in the Shell* Gundam: Battle Assault Gundam: Battle Assault 2 Macross VF-X 2 Mad Stalker: Full Metal Force Omega BoostI'm not saying those games are 10/10s. I'm saying they're worth sampling, and you might even stick with one or two. *If you consider the Tachikoma a mech.
