Yeah, the whole postgame has nothing to do with the story as far as I can tell. It really feels like Dragon Quest IX was a portable prototype to Dragon Quest X. Oh yeah. So I've started a new game on Dragon Warrior 3 for NES and Dragon Quest 3 for 3DS. I'm advancing more on the 3DS version due to its portability. The starting area feels pretty easy these days but as usual, the area around Romaly is annoying. At this stage of the game, money is still scarce and HP and MP are still very low. There are monsters that will not hesitate to poison you, either. That means having to take a trip back into town to get the poison squelched until my priest or hero gets the ability to do it. Also, you encounter rogue knights which will summon a heal slime which means you now have to compete against the heal slime's healing abilities or compete against the number of the heal slimes coming in. It's a little brutal. The game really lets up once you gain access to Dharma Temple, imo. I forget when exactly Romaly is, but I'll never forget how tough the mobs were in that big desert area when you travel east a bit. That dungeon was pretty tough too.

Yeah, Dragon Warrior III was bad about poisoning you a lot in that early game, either from Babbles or the Poison Toads leading up to and around Romaly. I always made sure to keep a few antidotes on hand, and always, always prioritized killing those particular enemies and hoping the RNG would let me kill them before I got poisoned or that I didn't get poisoned if they got a shot off.
You wanna talk rough? Try getting the Golden Claw out of the basement in the pyramid. The newer versions let you keep it as long as you get out with it, but in Dragon Warrior III, it keeps the property of a fight every step even outside of the pyramid! Of course, if you're grinding, that is an incredibly useful property to have.

Yeah, I decided to go for the Golden Claw on my 3DS run because you can keep it without triggering encounters at every step. At least it’s good for grinding, like you said, but using a typical team make up is rough in there. I probably should’ve done martial artist, warrior, and priest but I went with a mage in place of the warrior. In the versions based on the mobile version, it’s convenient to have the magician in the party once they learn group targeting spells.
Hopefully the new remake will balance the starting area a little bit but I won’t hold my breath for it.

Yeah, not having magic really hurts when half your team relies on it. But I do the same thing in most of my runs: Hero, Warrior/Martial Artist, Priest, and Mage. And once I hit Dharma and get the Book of Satori (or whatever they call it now), I make my Mage a Sage.

I responded, too. Had a genuine moment deciding which was better, DQIV or DQIII, but ultimately went with DQIV. Was happy they asked my second and third favorite, so DQIII and DQVIII it was.
Outside of DQXII, which will hopefully be good, I want them to release the offline version of DQX here, I want them to keep the MMORPGs/ARPGs separate from the main series, and I want some more Rocket Slime.

I suggested a 3D remake of DQ3 in the end. I also went with DQ4 for #1, and DQ3 for #2. And since I've beaten the first three via fan translations, I kind of just went ahead and selected the NES entries. I bet most people taking this have played the newer games, so I was probably an oddity that only selected DQ1-6, hah. I'm so pumped for the rest though. They better not turn their back on turn based. I think they just need better marketing for this series to hit better in the West. Gameplay wise they don't need to change much.

I reminded them that I still haven't forgiven SQEX for promising DQXI for 3DS in the west, then reneging.
I also told them to stop shoehorning MMORPG crap into DQ.
