I keep thinking it'd be funny if one of these guys were a playable recruit someday. Unless there's one in DQ7, 9, or a spinoff?
Your ship captain in DQ11 is one with a pink helmet named "Dave". lol
In the Japanese version of DQ XI, his name is Alice. Sylvando is Silvia, for that matter. (Un)fortunately, there’s no recruitable armored guy in the series yet. That said, it should possible to hack one into DQ3…

Balancing a few JRPGs at once has caused my DQV playtime to slightly slow down. Still progressing and should beat this month sometime. Currently just went through the mountains (which I somehow ended up back at the entrance multiple times before finding my way out) and found out the main characters wife is pregnant! . Game is generally really charming and I have been enjoying the adventure. I do think overall the story and characters are hurt by not having a more official party. The monster catching can lead to some cool members, but they also offer 0 value outside of combat. DQV has finally broken me into the series now and I am excited for rest of games.

DQV has finally broken me into the series now and I am excited for rest of games. You started with what I consider the second least appealing DQ (DQ9 is the least) so it's all uphill from 5. DQ4 is truly great (I recommend the DS version with this patch) and DQ8 is simply magnificent (the PS2 version I mean).

I highlighted why DQ5 wasn't a mega home run for me or anything. The family/generations idea is cool on paper but I don't think the execution was as good as it could have been. Any human characters you get along the way you barely get to know and spend time with for the most part. It's cool that the combat changes here and there in ways throughout the series, so the monster capturing is what makes this one unique in ways (think it might be in DQ7 or DQ9 too though? I'm not sure), but yeah.
DQ4, DQ8, and now DQ11 for me, all have the awesome set characters and get great development. Just a shame the US DQ4 on DS didn't have party talk, which Ex linked a patch for there. I'll admit they don't get fleshed out a ton after their introductions and all, but you still feel like you have a great group of characters you know and I like the more set party members, battle wise. But yeah I bet with party chat put back in, they get even cooler.
As others told me here I can echo this sentiment now too, DQ is such a consistent series. Everybody has their own favorites but overall, I've highly enjoyed my time with every single one so far. I'm playing DQ11 now, after that all I have left is DQ7 (DS) and DQ9. So I've had a blast with like 80% of the series. It's been some nice comfort food since I finally got into them a few years ago.

Wow. Guess I’m in the minority. Well, even I have to admit that having a party full of character-less monsters isn’t great. I like the big plot points, few and far between as they may be. Out of all the DQ I’ve played, I can remember those moments the best and they made me feel things even though they are all little 16-bit graphics (I first played the SFC version; I think even the PS2 version hadn’t been out yet or been out for long). I remember being shocked at the fate of the player character’s father and where the player ends up at. I remember feeling joy at being reunited with Borongo / Saber and later with Bianca (in the SFC version, I didn’t meet Flora / Nera until later). And then, reaching the point bosh has reached was a shock to me! Honestly, from this point on, the story begins to really pick up steam and it’s one thing after another for the most part with perhaps one slow part. And you’ll soon have a party of all humans! I’d like to see more games try this structure of starting you off as a child and then getting you to the point where you grow up and become a full fledged adult. In RPG terms, it could be used as a way to define your character in a way that’s more organic than in most other games. Like Dragon Quest 1 where you’re the big hero but you start off having to murder the slime population to stand a chance against anything else. Not especially heroic. The only game that I can think of that does something like this is Fallout 3 where you start off playing through scenes of your childhood in the vault before being thrust into the world (it also gives your character a player defined history). Ocarina of Time is another example but it falls short of what Fallout 3 did and what I’m envisioning.

It's been some nice comfort food since I finally got into them a few years ago. Dragon Quest does indeed epitomize the idea of "JRPG comfort food". I intend to play DQ2 (GBC) and DQ6 (DS) this year. If I ever finish RDR2 anyway.

Its been a pretty nice game to play in bite size chunks. The game is a slow burn, but very much comfort food and even when I didn't make much advancement few days ago getting lost in the mountain, I enjoyed it.
Hoping the remake of 3 in Octopath graphics comes out by midyear. Plan on playing I & II casually as background games at night after wrapping up V. Picked up the Switch versions since they were cheap and it was already hooked up to my TV but keep me posted on your thoughts on DQ2 GBC version, that one looked the best way to play it from a quick browse. Then hopefully 3 is out by mid year (If not play an older version), play IV and then maybe pick which one to play next in the series at random as most of the elements seem to be introduced by IV and thats when the games start going from short to medium/long journeys. I am really excited to play XI and VIII though. Thanks for the tips on the IV DS version patch!

Moulinoski : Spoilers so bosh doesn't get spoiled: I'll agree DQ5 had some of the most shocking events character wise. You being a prisoner for a decade or even longer? The Hero turning into stone for decades!? Some weirdly dark and twisted plot points there haha...

Then, you find out you’re heir to a kingdom, you meet your past self so you can get the ball you thought you’d kept but your future self actually swapped it out, meeting the ghosts of your parents on the way to the final boss! Oh, and your son is the prophesied legendary hero and not you! I’m not sure if this is true, but DQ V’s protagonist has the lowest base luck stat in the entire series. If true, it’s one heck of a case of story and gameplay integration!

I looked it up, and apparently he starts extremely low, but actually ends up one of the highest of the series when all is said and done. Wild!
