Doing a little more research based off those sales numbers lists... and holy crap there was a Gameboy Color port of DKC? Looks impressive too.

Good thing this month doesn't require much expert knowledge then, eh? I'm guessing I'm going to end up messing around more on the PC side as well. I've got Deus Ex installed again, and played through part of the tutorial. Stopped at the stealth stuff because I was tired and needed sleep. I'm also very much thinking about giving a 4X strategy game a go, either a Civilization game or one of the Heroes of Might & Magic games. Apparently HoMM3 is the best-selling GOG game of all time right now? Pretty wild. That is crazy, but not unbelievable. I've played 1-4 and yes HoMM3 is definitely the best. They did a good job of the diverse races, but not over doing it. As toei put it, there is more of an RPG aspect as you level your heroes kinda like Warcraft III, but the game is turn-based. Also, your heroes don't fight directly.
I'm going through Shinobi III right now, which is pretty solid. I changed the difficulty, but all I saw was less life. Are any of the later levels/bosses different?

I don't think you miss out on anything from the different difficulties. Looks like I do own Myst Masterpiece Edition on GOG... not sure I want to do more note taking alongside DQ3 right now though.

Yeah, I was surprised that it got a GBC port, although I guess I shouldn't be that surprised given that Donkey Kong Land came out on the ol' green screen, and was plenty impressive as well.

maybe it didn't have much marketing behind it? I can't speak to the PS2 version, but the original PC version was advertised decently in PC gaming/hardware magazines. Although I first heard about it while researching PC games in 2000. Though in 2000 I didn't have a PC that could run it, but when the GOTY version released in 2001 I did. So that's why I played that version. Sounds like you enjoyed Invisible War, which is nice to see. I think IW gets a bad rap. Sure it's a dummied down consolized Deus Ex experience, but IW has a lot to offer on its merit. Though I didn't play the Xbox version, I beat it on PC back in 2004. To rate all the DE games I've beaten: Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition = 9/10 Deus Ex: Invisible War = 8/10 Deus Ex: Human Revolution = 7/10 There's a downward trend yeah, so I have not played Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. I have played Deus Ex: The Fall, which was awful, and I didn't finish it. And I've played a bit of Deus Ex Go, which seemed okay, but didn't hold my attention long. I'm going through Shinobi III right now, which is pretty solid. Glad to see you are playing and enjoying it. There are other high quality Genesis action games to recommend, but in the spirit of this theme, I was sticking with best sellers to the recommendations I gave you. When you get deeper into the Genesis library, there's plenty of great stuff... regardless of how well it sold. Have you ever played Alien Soldier?

Yeah, that's Super Punch-Out!! done. Actual hardware, no save states. It got frustrating refighting Narcis Prince and Hoy Quarlow. Believe it or not, though, I had a much harder time with Rick Bruiser than the last fight with Nick. Rick has a lot of off-speed stuff that requires very different tactics to dodge, or even put a fist to him. Nick, on the other hand, requires alternating punches, but doesn't require as many forced left- or right-handed punches to land to start the combo. The part at the beginning is the big reflex test that probably gets people, but since I've been doing Tyson so much, speed is actually a bit preferred. Anyway, that was super stressful. I don't know that I'd say this is harder than Punch-Out!!, but it definitely has some super challenging fights until you figure out the patterns (it's even more pattern-based than the NES game), and even when you do figure them out, you have to stay on your game, as fights can go badly fast. The super punches are great, and that's where I did most of my damage against Nick. Since I had an easier time dodging and hitting, despite the speed, I had some powerful punches ready to go, and that last match went shockingly well. I think that was probably my fourth or fifth attempt at him, whereas Rick took me probably more than 20. Great game, probably a good four or five hours into it for the win. I'd say... 8.5/10, at least. Maybe a 9. Now that I know more about it, it may become part of my regular rotation. Thanks for spurring me on, Ex !

Love the game. It is a bit more gimmicky than the original, and no the final boss isn't harder than Iron Mike. But I figured if I phrased it just right, you'd finally get off your keister and beat this stupendous sequel. I am glad you enjoyed SPO, though I had zero doubt you'd be able to beat it.

I did for a bit, though, no joke. I ran into multiple brick walls along the way, but Hoy Quarlow was one where I'm like "this mess is getting serious". Then Rick, and I'm pretty sure I barely touched him my first few fights. I don't care if it's easier than the first game, it's still extremely challenging.

I don't care if it's easier than the first game, it's still extremely challenging. I should rephrase what I said last night. I think the final boss of SPO is not as hard as the final boss of PO. But, the preceding fighters in SPO are harder overall than the preceding fighters in PO. So averaged out, PO and SPO are probably equal in terms of challenge. One day I gotta get around to this: Been sittin' on my Wii shelf for ever and ever. Still sealed. Maybe we should have a sports themed Club Retro next year.

Yeah, I agree. I think the set of Hoy Quarlow, Rick Bruiser, and then Nick Bruiser is pretty ridiculous. There were moments I thought about giving up, but in most cases I was slowly getting better, up until the point the dam broke. Once I beat Rick for the first time, I wasn't sure I'd do it again, but managed it a couple more times on the way to Nick. I'm trying to remember how they stack up to Super Macho Man in the NES version, because he was a tough cookie as well, but the jump to Tyson is like a sheer wall - screw gradual increases in difficulty!
The Wii game is very, very tough. I made it to the title defense bouts, which ups the difficulty of all the fighters, and it's rough. Very much in the school of SPO, perhaps even more puzzle-based. The game will absolutely punish you, and the off-speed stuff they throw gives me fits. I think part of the reason SPO's Rick fight gave me so much trouble was dealing with muscle memory that I have from years of playing PO. There are certain things you probably shouldn't do in SPO that are ingrained from the original. One was when I got a late hit on Rick, that immediate counter he'd do - I usually instinctively dodge left, but it's far safer to block up.
