Yeah, to some degree, games of that era that showed ambition are going to have some rough edges.

Are there story/mechanic reasons to not skip Gothic 1? Nah, you can skip it, Gothic 2 definitely improved on it as far as mechanics go. Playing the first game is just a personal recommendation of mine, not a must. Combat is janky though, no matter which Gothic you're playing. It's just that the original Gothic has a grittier atmosphere as it's set inside a 'prison'. I say prison, but it's more like a mining valley surrounded by a magical barrier which can be entered from the outside, but living things can't leave. The prisoners are sent there to mine ore for the kingdom which is needed in the war against the orcs, unfortunately soon after the barrier was erected, the prisoners took over and now the king deals directly with them... The prisoners send ore outside and they receive food, goods and even women in exchange. While some of the prisoners exchange ore, others are solely interested in leaving the barrier. You play as the newest prisoner, so everyone is bullying you at first and you have to fight for everything. It's a unique setting, especially for a fantasy RPG. Which isn't to say Gothic 2 isn't gritty though. Just avoid Gothic 3 like you'd avoid Shadow Hearts 3.

True story, @tsumuri's earlier praising on Gothic 1 & 2 got me to buy their GOG versions. Haven't played them yet unfortunately, but there's only a couple thousand games I'd like to play at this point anyway. @tsumuri, what's your opinion of.. ? - XeogredOf your entire GOG list, I recommend Fallout Tactics the most strongly. It's a brilliant SRPG once you get sucked into it.

I never completed Gothic 3, so I never gave Gothic 4 a shot. But I mean, different developers, main character looks like a dork, shares no connection with previous games. Gothic 3 was a hot mess, so it might actually be an improvement over it - but that's not saying much. If you want more 'actual' Gothic, you're probably better off playing Risen - which is not as good, but still.

I did buy the second one for 360, because it has a tropical island/pirate theme. Actually looking at reviews, its seems Risen 2: Deep Waters is considered the best game in that series. Which is probably not saying much.

King's Field IV and Front Mission 5 are stellar. From your list though, I'd put these at top: Sin & Punishment: Star Successor Max Payne Max Payne 2 Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter Valkyrie Profile 2Pandora's Tower <-this is on my to-play for this year as well Front Mission 3 (Emma) Muramasa The Demon BladeRogue Galaxy (I don't consider this a good game, but Sarge and toei do IIRC. I'd be interested in your opinion of it once you got at least 20 hours into it.)

King's Field IV and Front Mission 5 are stellar. I don't know about emulation right now. I got the latest KF4 controller patch working today, but I'm having some serious drift/dead zones issues with this 8bitdo Pro 2 and PCSX2. This isn't the first time this has happened... but Duckstation lets you customize the deadzones at least so this wasn't an issue with all my PSX emulation in the last few months. I tried calibrating it via W10 and then the 8bitdo software itself, but something is still messed up and it gave me a headache.
I might try some Xbox controllers tomorrow.
Was that big PCSX2 update coming this year? I guess the latest release is still 1.6 from 2020 which is what I'm using...
I keep picking up Contra 4 off and on, but I can't tell if I just suck at this one or it's not really pulling me in like the others. It really doesn't feel great to play something like that on two small split screens to me...

It really doesn't feel great to play something like that on two small split screens to me... It's a WayForward game. They make middling (most often) to good platformers (occasionally) but I've yet to play a great one by WF. And I've sampled and finished plenty of their games. People tend to rate WF platformers more highly then they deserve, because WF games tend to have nice graphics.

Harsh... but maybe true? It certainly looks, feels, and clinches me up like a legit Contra. But yeah... never been too big on WayForward myself either.
Contra 1, Super C, Contra 3, Hard Corps, and Hard Corps Uprising (+ Blazing Chrome for good measure) all had me hooked instantly. I've been casually playing Contra 4 a random session or two for like the last three weeks I think, lol. Not sure if it'll ever get those hooks in me.
